Hi Lads, I have a problem with my tranny that I haven't been able to find an answer to on my regular Buell Forum - Buells Downunder - in Australia. Seems like it might not be such a common problem. Bike has just over 25,000miles. I originally thought I had an intermittent slip in the clutch, but after replacing with a Barnett the problem is still there. Symptoms: 1. Momentary increase in revs & a physical surge. 2. Only happens in 3rd gear (It has now deteriorated enough after doing the clutch that I can get it to "jump" at will). 3. Only happens after using engine braking & then accelerating. My guess is that it is the drive dogs on the gears are worn or the selector fork bent. Any other ideas? Not looking forward to splitting the cases. Regards, FOB (Fool Ona Buell) |

Sounds like you are on the right track. Might want to check the rear tire also, I had a crappy Dunlop D220 that acted exactly like worn dogs (I know, the M2 had them), but went away when I replaced the badly worn tire. |

Fob, I am starting to have the same issue. Did you solve the problem? |

Thanks for the PM Avi99...a little reminder to post up my findings! The selector fork (bronze) was worn. This selector slides the dog between 2nd (? pretty sure from memory) & 3rd gear. The dogs are very sloppy on the splines & figure it is from continually rocking of the dog under accel/decel. I give transmissions & bikes in general a pretty hard time, must be from my MX days. My buest guess it is from too many monos in 2nd where the throttle is on-off-on-off to maintain the balance point, or, too many clutchless shifts into third while on the back wheel. I have replaced every item involved with 2nd/3rd + all new bearings & forks. Bike is not back on the road yet as I am going the route of bore, compression, squish, forged pistons, gapless rings, oversize valves, cams etc. (the motor has been suffering from poor ring seal from day one, which is why I needed a catch-can). Shall post a link to the "build" at buellsdownunder http://ausbuells.informe.com when completed. Cheers, Gavin |

I'm having the same issue. My diagnosis and the Buell service diagnosis is that there is a tooth or two physically missing from 3rd gear. I think I'm going to use the opportunity to replace it with a Baker transmission if they have one specific to my 2007 XB12R |

On a Buell DDFI 1999S3 Thunderbolt, Mainshaft 2nd and 3rd gear/Countershaft 3rd and 2nd gear connect issue(s). Best bet would be, trap door access and remove a transmission for a visual. Cotter pin caught in between shift fork(while in a right hand sweeper) can be the culprit, in my case. Goto gear powerflow illustration in service manual. Under repair in progress. Gear(s) Any one McGyver the worn part? Pro's & Con's re-undercutting the above mentioned part's. Good Luck Yall's. GM |

Bump, bump, bump. My XB engine is staring at me from the corner in the basement. It wants to be fixed. Were any teeth missing on third or was it a shift fork/etc. type of issue?? Oh this sucks, I really don't want to do all this work. |
