Sparky: if I remember correctly, it was only a small batch of '97 S1's where you have to remove the brake rotor to get the front wheel off. I've pulled the caliper several times on my '98 S3. You have to angle it just so, and before even trying, you'll have to push the pistons all the way back into the calipers. I believe that I slipped the top of the caliper out first (but considering fume-caused failing memory, it might be the other way :-), and also make sure to line up the wheel/rotor, so that the spokes of both are out of the way. I put some masking tape on the wheel to keep from scuffing the paint.

Al:

Loosen the bolts securing the rotor so as to induce some lateral play on the part. This is the only way not to damage your rim. I hate scratches as they stay with me till I get rid of the part. I never get a long life out of a rim. They either get bent by hitting a pothole or the tire changers mangle them up.

Hi all,

Just got done putting the 2000 rotor on my 97 M2 and I have a few questions.

1)I noticed during disassembly that there were 2 very thin washers on each caliper bolt between the caliper and the mounting bosses on the front forks. When I reassembled the caliper to the fork w/ the washers in between, the caliper looks very, very, very close to the rotor buttons. The washers do go between the caliper and forks, correct? I looked at the repair manual and there was no mention of the washers anywhere in the brake R+R. Anyone else that did the conversion notice this??


2)In addition to the 2ooo rotor, I also put the race kit bars on, including the braided hose. Being that there was no mention of how to rout the hose (either to loop through the forks like the speedo cable or stay outside of the forks), how have others routed the hose? If I route the hose outside of the forks, it loops way out in the air, if I rout it though the forks it rubs in the shocks.

All, What tires have you tried? My 2000 M2 came with D205's ; and I like the way they "wear" ... but not the way they "grip". I run less than the recommended pressure; but I still unexpectedly "spin" the rear (especially on colder days)... (not really fun when cornering) Is there a tire out there that might grip better, but still last a while?

Would anyone like to share the name of a wholesaler/e-tailer where they get there tires? There is only two places here in Casper where I can get tires for my bike and they are both WAY overpriced.

I've looked into a set of 207's at www.pecosbill.com, but I am wondering if anyone knows of a better or more appropriate place to get them?

As of today I've only done 311 miles on the Azaro's. My initial feeling is I'm running them to hard. Contrary to Buell's recommended tyre pressures, I've gone with the tyre manufacturers 36\42 agreed standard and after explaining this last week, I think I might be eating humble pie real soon. Apart from that, they feel no different from the Dunlops.

I'll keep you posted.

Different tires than the Azaros... but I like my Pirelli Dragons at 33 front and 36 rear. They seem to change handling characteristics quite noticably with only minute changes in air pressure. I suppose your suspension setup could dictate what air pressures work best in different tires.

I've only seen one other Buell with the Dragons. Anyone else out there try them? I don't run the "full tilt boogie" Dragons... I'm running the "street" versions. Really like 'em and I think they handle quite differently than the Dunlops. Not necessarily better (although I like 'em better... IMHO)... just different. They're a very round profile.

Even if these folks cost a few more bucks for tires, in the long run YOU Benefit.

another reason to buy from ASB and, although I've not bought from them yet, Sporttwin . . . ..

I know i can get many of the items they carry a bit cheaper, but they're the only places I know where I can get some of the Buell-specific toys . . . . .I'm willing to buy, and wait for, some more mundane stuff in order to help assure that these places will be there when I decide I can no longer live without the carbon fiber catch-can, pushrod tubes and vanity mirror . . . . .

as a reminder of this fact to myself, 10 years ago there were 11, count 'em, 11 bike shops within a 20 minute ride of my house . . . . . closest shop now is 25 minutes, with the next closest one being almost 45 minutes . . . . . . businesses disappear all the time . . .it's up to us to help make sure that they are there when we need them

Okay, I feel sufficiently chastened now for asking. :-) I HAVE ordered from sporttwin.com, that's where the zero gravity windshield along with some other playtoys came from.

Unfortuneatly they don't seem to carry rubber for those round thingies attached to my axles. So, they are out of the running on this one.

As for Tat over at americansportbike.com...well, it's kinda like this. I guess I am an uber geek who likes to see ONLINE catalogs, it doesn't help that in 2001 I am morally opposed to sending someone $5 for a copy of their paper catalog so I can buy stuff from them. Why should I, or any customer have to go through this now??? I ain't gonna just endlessely whine about this one either, I have the skill and if Tat wants to take advantage of my generosity I will build him the product catalog online for FREE, just so it is there. I'm sure there is a good reason why he hasn't done it yet, all I know is what I need for my bike and what I am willing to go through to get it. :D (Yes, that was a genuine offer to setup a full e-commerce website for free. Feel free to repeat it to him.)

I am sure that many of you are going to decry me as a bonehead and turn the ol' torches on me...and that is fine, I'm wearing the flame proof skivvies. :D (he he he)

Just to be clear, I am NOT opposed to buying things from our 'sponsors'. I think it is the ONLY way to go, even if it costs a few dollars more. I am just saying that one of the sponsors Blake mentioned don't have what I need, and the other...well I don't know!

So, I'll add my advice to the others. If you CAN get it from www.americansportbikes.com or www.sporttwin.com by all means do, even if the price is $5 higher...it's all good.

But guys, when it comes to these tires...I'm sorry but the HD Dealer wants $175 for a Dunlop 205 rear! This is outrageous since I can get a new 207 rear at www.tireexpress.com for $97!! I can handle a few bucks to support a local dealer, but $78 is a long stretch, even subtracting $28 for shipping still leaves you with a difference of $50 and that's half the price of the '01 shift kit for my bike!

Wow, this is getting really long. I think I will stop now.

I was reading at the top were the 2000 upgrade parts list was at and was wondering if any body out there has any opinion on the 2000 upgrade versus an after market rotor and pads for a X-1. I've been considering the EBC pro-lite rotor to go with the EBC HH pads but would like some input from people that have tried something other than stock. Good or Bad. My 99 X-1 brakes squeal, grab, fade, gets shiny spots on the rotor and the rotor feels like it too loose in the carrier. I don't have a measuring device to check the play. I've tried to tighten down the carrier/rotor connecting bolts but they are tight. If I'm going to replace the rotor might as well get a better system.

I've got the Ferodo Blacklighting rotor and pads on my 99S3 and love the combo. Then again on my 96 S1 I just went with the Y2K update with ferodo pads and can't tell that much difference between them. So honesly if it was me I'd go with the Y2K rotor and ferodo pads. Give Dave King a call and he'll fix you right up. That's Manchester Buell (800)CYCLE93.

Will stock '96 S2T Marchesini wheels, bearings, axles, front carrier, rotors and rear pulley directly fit a '99 S3T chassis? If not, can the '96 Marchesini's be upgraded with newer bolt-on hardware and/or bearings to fit the '99 S3T chassis components?

Any advice would be appreciated.
