My X1 currently starts fine, then runs fine for the first 5-6 minutes then starts missing and backfiring. Experts, any ideas? I have checked the fuel lines, fuel filter, replaced air cleaner, O2 sensor, welded the previously cracked header (right by 02 sensor bung), and tomorrow am putting a Ohm reader on the head temp/ET sensor and checking the battery cables. Could someone please give me some direction? Thanks

Hi,
I had exactly the same symptoms on my X1 for a long time.
Turned out be a bad the fuel pump along with the IAT position, that's what fixed mine. This may not be your problem but it’s an idea....

Take a look in this thread,

Hope helps,

Buellistic,
I have that same air filter setup, I will try a relocation of the IAT today! I will let you know. Thanks!

Hey Jon,

Do you have ECMSPY?...., with this software you can to do useful changes, as such switch on idle closed loop in the system configuration of the ECMSPY. If the Idle is closed loop, it should even compensate for some error in TPS, it also helped me a lot with the idle problem in hot.

Buellistic,
I relocated the IAT and it initially seemed to help but, the problem came back. I am going to replace the engine temp sensor tomorrow and see if that helps at all. Anyhow, I do not have ECMSPY. I wish I did. Does anyone in Southern California want to offer up their services (ECMSPY)? Please pretty please

Bought a X1 White Lightning in September 2001, a 2002 model. Paid for racing engine management unit, Vance & Hince and air filter. The racing management system was never installed as the dealer couldn't get it running.

After many other problems I have with this machine, I am now in South Africa (just btw), I have been battling with it for 3 years now running from one dealer to the next without getting to a solution.

The bike starts fine in the morning and would run about 10 miles, backfire a couple of times and die. Leaving for 45 minutes to an hour, during which it just would not start, itt would fire up again, run 1 or 2 miles, backfire and quit again and just won't start for at least 45 minutes.

Do you have installed a aftermarket air cleaner?, if so, Perhaps your air temperature sensor is causing that issue or bad idle.

When the engine is started, the startup enrichment compensates the false air temperature signal,
but when it is finished, the engine stalls because the idle mixture is too lean and for this reason backfire and die.

The effect is that the fuel is reduced now, because hot air is less dense than
cold air, but as the air was cold in reality, the mixture was too lean.

The air temperature sensor is either badly placed and gets heated up from the engine or some hot air (from the exhaust or the engine)flows along the temperature sensor and make him send a wrong signal to the ECM.

You could try to move the IAT to another position such as behind the windshield like me ,to protect it from engine heat.

If the IAT is placed at it's stock position, then something goes wrong there and you will have to find out.

Also could to be a bad ETS???

Have you ever gotten your AFV read?.

First of all, I would do a TPS reset.

A fuel pressure test wouldn't hurt either (if is good will be 49 psi, if fuel pressure is too low or high than 49 psi you will have found the fault.

I had exactly the same symptoms on my X1 for a long time.
Turned out be a bad fuel regulator, that's what fixed mine. This may not be your problem but it’s an idea....

Those type of problems are often the most difficult to find.

Please let me know if you found a solution.

Regards.
