Am I rightly assuming that you have to remove the front axle and swing the right fork around like you do when changing a tire, to get the front caliber off in order to get the pads out?

On the Tube frame bikes you can remove pads without removing the caliper--take out pins and center allen and pads come out the back toward wheel.Much easier than removing caliper and actually the first step in caliper removal with PM wheels as clearance is so tight.

I do pad changes at the track all the time. No, you don't have to remove the axle. Simply remove the pin, and press the pads against the caliper pistons to make some clearance to wiggle the pads out towards the engine. The inside pad may get a little tight as it reaches the rim, so let is slide downward some along the outer edge of the rotor. To reinstall the new ones, be sure the caliper pistons are almost completely recessed into the caliper, moving them very gradually. That way you can more easily get the thicker new pads back in the same way the old ones came out.

If you want faster brake service in the future. I recommend installing a 4-6" longer brake line to the caliper, allowing you to remove the 2 allen bolts and lower the caliper away from the rotor to easily clean/replace anything.

I was also told, to never clean a caliper with brake clean, only soapy water or 409. Then rinse thoroughly. Apparently the Brake Cleaner is damaging to the Pad material
