Okay,
need help bad. I just adjusted my clutch mechanism and the bike isn't going anywhere. So is it too loose or to tight? I followed the directions in the manual and thought I had it all right. Anyway, adjusted adjusting screw counterclockwise which brought it out more(it was about 4 or 5 turns), then I turned it clockwise about a 1/2 turn to put lock back on. Then I pulled the clutch lever 3 times and screwed the adjuster until there was about 1/16 space in between the back of the lever and the bracket. Then I tightened the jam nut and put everything else back together. The lever is tighter than it was before, but when I looked at it before I put the cover back on, it pulled the cable to the same point. So did I turn the adjusting screw too far?

David...your write up confused me. The clutch is easy to adjust, you can adjust it from inside the clutch cover. Turn the screw so that the ball ramp actuator goes inward and hold onto the clutch lever while turning the screw in. It will pull the slack out of the cable, you shouldn't have to adjust the cable itself unless you installed a new cable. The clutch (ball ramp) actuator just needs the slack taken out of it. If there isn't any tension on the cable, thats the problem. Manuals are good for a reference but can be confusing, I hope this helps. Goody

David after reading your post again, it sounds like your clutch cable is adjusted to tight and keeping the clutch disengaged. Let some of the tension out and when adjusting the screw on the clutch hold onto the clutch lever until the slack is almost completely out. Place a dime between the clutch lever and bracket to measure slack. This will give you the necessary slack in the cable and not to tight to slip the clutch.

Goody, that's what Matt thinks too. I just couldn't figure out why the cable was so tight and how to adjust it the right way. I was using the adjuster to pull the slack, but it keeps pulling it too tight. I understand what you are saying, but I am just not getting the cable adjuster in the right spot. Matt is gonna come over and open up school on cable adjustment for dummies. LOL. Thanks for the help, I just wish you all had video classes, then maybe I could do better.

david, i think your clutch is toasted. .. bunt ... baked ... done. but i'm not even a 'chrome consultant', so don't take my words for gospel.
either way, you should drop it off at SSHD, and have Cory look at it and the oil leak in the vicinity of the rear cylinder too.
i'd say it's prolly from riding around with it slipping for so long. but you got your 5 year warranty
and the lifetime service plan to boot! so you should be golden like a shower... ... ...

your cable was a little bit off, but it's better if it is a little too loose, than too tight.
and your adjustment screw was 'heavily bottomed' (to use the service manual terminology) and i think that was where you were getting hung up on.
as seen in the pic you sent me.

the adjustment screw has right handed threads, but you are turning it from the back side, so it's backwards (lefty=tighty, righty=loosey)

i loosened it all the way IN and brought it back out to finger tight, then used goody's 'one hand on the lever' trick to get it right in the sweet spot. and it still slipped, after i re-adjusted it when you came back, and then before and during my test ride, but it still slipped in 4th/5th.

and that weird squealling/chugging noise when you first moved the bike out of the garage, and then again as you feathered the clutch and rolled off down the street is another reason why i suspect the clutch to be fit for replacement.

i really like that trick, and i'll use it to dial in the 9's clutch. thanks goody

Matt,
Glad you couldn't find anything major wrong (listen to sarcasm), I would've been a little worried. I was afraid of that though (clutch replacement), since it only happened in the higher gears.
