Hell, I might even refer to it as "backed up ". Damn near broke my back jumping that bike over twenty-five years ago. So, I gave up riding for a long time. Plus, I could not afford to ride any longer. For some strange reason, Patty kept on getting pregnant.  Spring cleaning will be here soon, so it's got to go to a good home. |

Wow Mike, that's an impressive trip. Have you dropped the bike doing those trails? This weekend was the Sandblast Rally. You should have run. The Uly isn't really the bike for it, but that doesn't seem to stop you.
As for myself, I spent the afternoon proving that NC is still a very rural state.
At one point I stopped and the cows came over to look at the bike. They are very curious animals. |

Today on my way into Greenville I spotted an X1 White Lightning by the road with a for sale sign. I've never seen the bike around here before. I called the number on the sign. Turns out it's his son's bike that he bought to go to and from college with. It's a 2002 with only 5,400 miles. He's asking $3,995. If anyone is interested in an X1, might be worth the trip to Greenville. |

Not yet, but I'm working on it.  Wet mud gets really hairy.

I don't know if I'd like to enter to compete, but I would like to see if I can get the bike around the course. I've been able to get away with a lot so far, but one big log or a large area of mud would stop the Ulysses pretty quickly. |

Kristi, it wasn't by any chance Doug Swords was it? He had an X-1 White Lightning that was "his son's" but it never saw the light of day as far as I knew. Wonder if he finally got smart and left J&E or got fired during a Jim Hannan 'senior moment'or one of Deanna'a 'psyhco episodes'? |

Not sure...seems as though who I talked to is the step-dad. He made mention that his son's dad bought it for him while working for HD. His son rode it to and from ECU and then NC State. Made for easy parking on campus. Now graduated and having a car, the bike is up for sale, as he's into "sport bikes". |

Ewwww...Mud! (Color me impressed!!!) I just can't seem to imagine going off road on the Scg. But it looks like you had fun! Maybe next time i'll get the Uly. (then I'd need to figure out how to grow another 3 inches in height) |

I do not have any cool mud shots, but this dirt fender shows I have been hitting the dirt roads here lately.
I have to admit that knobbies sure help when the mud gets deep. The Syncs are not as good as the D616 off road, that is for sure, neither tire matches a good DOT knobbie. |

Just a note:
I did my mileage test again, this time was able to go 33.5 miles before the bike started to sputter and didn't want to maintain speed. I pulled off into a parking lot, but the bike was actually still idling and would respond to throttle. I could have potentially gone a little further, but didn't want to risk pulling out on 401.
That 33.5 miles included longer than normal warm-up times due to the cold weather and some stop-and-go traffic, so it should actually be on the low side. At a steady speed the number may jump to 40 or more. In any case, I should be able to consistently travel 30 miles on the fuel light. |

Brankin told me once that federal regs requires bikes to go 30 miles after the light comes on, and cars to go 60. Looks like you're right in line with that. |

Another thing that occurred to me- out of my last tank I averaged 42mpg and was able to travel 34.3 miles on the light which means the reserve was approximately .82 gallons. The factory spec of .83 gallons appears to be spot on. |

Sarah has to work Saturday morning, so I was thinking of going for a ride. I probably won't go too far as I'd like to be back in the early afternoon. I might take that same route I took with my brother-in-law a month or so ago:
It's about 75 miles each way, takes a little under two hours depending on how bad you want to ignore the speed limits. The only twisty section is between Liberty and Asheboro, the rest is wandering and relatively scenic.
I was thinking I might grab some breakfast in Fuquay (my neighbors just opened a bakery- it is most excellent) around 8-9am, then hit the road. If I'm feeling adventurous I might scout for trails on the way back.

Spike I would if I didn't have to work. I was debating on going to Michael's on Sunday depending on the weather. 30% chance of rain. Decent odds. Afterwards I was planning on wondering the backroads around Jordan lake or wherever the roads led. Anyone want to make a day of it? |

Yesterday I went to the BMW Performance Center for the on-road course. It's a really great facility located alongside the manufacturing plant in Greer, SC. The performance driving program has been active for several years but this is the first year for the bikes.
First class facility with a 1.4 mile road course out back (complete with wet and dry skid pads). I've been up there before for off-road events so it was nice to see familiar faces.
We were using their 1200's and 650's for the course. The class had 6 riders and focused on road safety and accident avoidance. The philosophy is challenge by choice so rider's don't feel intimidated or pressured to ride too far outside their comfort zone. The morning had lots of low speed work including stopping exercises, tight slaloms, full lock turning in a box, figure eights and hourglass exercises in a box, riding the bike in various positions like side saddle, kneeling on the seat, standing side saddle, and various other drills. The braking drills were really great and included full rear lock skids from 40 mph (lots of noise and smoke and long black marks), hard non-ABS front brake stops, and grab and stomp as hard as you can full ABS stops from 55 mph. Good ABS brakes on a street bike are amazing. There were various drills using different lean techniques which were interesting. The afternoon session was accident avoidance at speed drills with lots of braking, leaning, braking, picking out safe "outs" in impending collisions and such. Good stuff and I hope it comes back to me when I need it.
At the end we had track session playing on the road course which was a blast! I was on the lead instructor's wheel the whole time and he knew I wanted to play. He's a road racer with lots of experience so I had a ball following his lines. The pace got plenty fast and it felt great after the "structured" drills all day.
After the wrap-up talk I was saying my
good-byes and the the lead instructor said "hey Mike, hang on a second". So I did. He wanted to know if I was interested in getting involved in their instructor training program. It seems they want to model the bike program after the existing "M" program for cars and include on and off roads events, training, tours, instructional track days at VIR or Robling Road, and maybe a Rally Moto team. I would really like to get in their training program (specifically the three week "boot camp" course in Germany; wishful thinking) so I'll follow up and see if this leads to anything.
All in all, a good day.

That would be great for you Mike, I am sure you would make a great instructor in any situation, especially when it comes to performance riding. Gives you a reason to practice all the time. I stick with the basics, that is why the BRC from MSF works for me so well. Best of luck with that. |
