I'm new to HD type engines. What exactly is Sport-Trans fluid? SAE weight, etc? I have used Redline oils for a long time. I am planning on using Redline 20w-50 engine oil at the next oil change. I don't believe the Redline 75w-90 will be an appropriate substitution for Sport-Trans fluid. Is Sport-Trans fluid synthetic? Are there synthetic substitutes? Thanks. | ||

I use redline 75w90 in my tranny. I use the regular though, I was strongly adviced NOT to use the heavy. And I'm glad I followed that advise, I later saw the goo it leaves in someone elses clutch basket. | ||

The Redline engineer I called said to use the 75w-90. At the time I did not realize there was a Primary oil and a Sport-Trans fluid. Neither HD bottle gives any information about the fluids so you can't learn anything. Maybe I'll call the Redline boys again just for fun and see what they say is a direct substitute for Sport-Trans fluid. I'll let you know what they say. Thanks. | ||

OK, called Redline. The official Redline replacement oil for HD Sport-Trans fluid is their standard 75w-90. So there we have it. | ||

I Concur, Mobil 1 75w-90 all the way. I am currently trying out the new Extended life 15w/50 Mobile 1 in the engine, I'll let you all know how it looks in 5k. "Ride it till it seizes" Ski  | ||

I'm not sayin' one's better than the other, but have any of ya'll tried anything else? I've used Redline and Mobil1, and to be honest I didn't notice a difference between the two. (Message edited by glitch on February 15, 2005) | ||

Sorry Glitch, I've only used the HD and the Mobil 1. I'm a cheap Bassttard when it comes spending money on oil changes. I can't see paying 10 bucks a quart. I even use the Sport Tech filter from Wally World. Looks just like the Buell filter only differance is the painted name on the outside. "Ride it till it seizes" Ski | ||

SPORT-TRANS is obsolete. Harley has now admitted in print that a synthetic 20W-50 MOTOR OIL is suitable lubricant for all of their engines, transmissions, chaincases, etc. one lubricant suitable for your entire motorcycle. 20W-50 synthetic motor oil is easily available at most auto parts and discount stores. often as low as 3 dollars per quart. have fun. | ||

on amsoil website there cross reference for sport trans fluid is their 20/50 synthetic motor oil. wonder if their 75/90 gear oil would supply additional protection , it has a pour point to minus 50 degrees | ||

Sokota, Amsoil 75/90 gear oil is not suitable for XB trans. I was told by Amsoil engineer that it contains friction modifiers that can degrade the wet clutch. He simply told me not to use it. | ||

tank, me and my 2 roommates (hanses25 and thansesxb9rs) all use the mobil 1 v-twin synthetic 20w50 oil for everything in our bikes and seems to work great. could tell a difference switching to mobil 1 at ~4000 miles on the bike. |
