My bike is a '03 XB9R... And I have the black wheel bearing casings(or whatever the hell you call it). So I call my local dealer and ask about them about it because I am taking the bike in for its 5000 mile service this monday. The service guy told me that I do not have any open campaigns on my bike...? If they are black does that ALWAYS mean that they are the bad? And if so, is the dealer responsible for changing them/ or will they make me pay out of my pocket?
Thanks
Dustin

They are supposed to replace them. The new ones should be orange. Tell them to get their heads out of their asses and call Buell if they don't believe you.

Print this out and take it with you to a qualified dealership.

They told me that too. I asked them to put them in writing so when I end up in the hospital due to a failing wheel bearing they would be responsible for MY and my bikes' damage.

I wonder why they refused that and (another dealer) replaced the bearings?

Simply take in the campaign info and politely suggest they call Buell Customer Service or S.P.O.C.

Glitch, thanks for the PDF.. It should provide them with enough info to fix the problem.

I guess what bothers me the most is that I hear too ofthen that owners need to ask for a recall. A bike shouldn't leave a shop without the wheelbearings recall done. It's dangerous.

Then when an owner asks, Sometimes they tell 'em it's not necessary or already done.

Another example is the fuses. There appears to have been a recall for the 7.5A fuses to be replaced with 10A. They did mine. The second visit the service guy replaced them back with 7.5A because that is what's on the side of cover is printed. I went back and had it replaced again for 10A. Guess what? A month later they did some more warranty work and they again changed them out for 7.5A.... I really grow weary of places like that.

One day when I was there one service guy comes out with a sheet of paper with a buell logo on top. I couldn't see what was written on it, but he said it was the instructions for replacing some fuses for 10A. It turned out all 7.5A fuses needed to be swapped for 10A.

That's all I know.

The bearings weren't a recall.
That being said all service bulletins are here.

The fuses are a running change, not a recall.

Taken from the Service Bulletin:

"There is no need to replace good fuses on vehicles built prior to this change, however, it is acceptable to use the new fuses in vehicles built prior to the running change."

Here is the Service Bulletin for the fuses.

Link may be kinda slow, give it some time.

Can someone explain why they would go to the trouble of wiring the fuse boxes differently on the R and S?

My Dealer gave me the run around as well. I showed them the campaign and they still did not believe. They finally called S.P.O.C. and verified my bike needed the new bearings. Don't get me started on how long the dealer took to replace them. First time ordered two sets of fronts, then supposedly Buell does make a puller for the rear bearings. The service writer I was dealing with finally brought in his automotive bearing puller kit and removed them himself.

The wheel bearings on the 03 Firebolt absolutely were a recall item. I lost a bearing on the back wheel two days before I was to take the bike in and the dealer came out and picked it up - told me not to even ride the bike down the driveway! Parts and labor - no charge. Centennial Park Buell in Pataskala, Ohio are some great folks because I never get the runaround like I hear others here tell about.

The wheel bearings are not a recall. They are part of a Service Bulletin for wheel bearing upgrade. The bulletin is B-051A it has gone through a revision since the one that is listed here on badweb.

Craig,

I stand corrected. The bearings were replaced as an upgrade and the word recall does not appear in the service bulletin.

What ever you want to call it, Buell sent out a letter to bring the bike in for bearing replacement and did it at no cost to the bike owner. If that's not a recall, it's awful close. A question of semantics really.

George

Have there been any recalls on the xb's then?

Do we have a 'true' recall online so I can see the difference?

I think the early XBs had a recall on the sidestand.
That's the only one I know of.

If not that, then the XB*Ss had the wiring issue.

And does someone have the sidestand recall either scanned or as a pdf?

My sidestand is on backorder btw.

Does the paper say "Recall" instead of 'Service Bulletin"?

What is being considered before the buell minds decide if something is a recall or a service bulletin?

As always, just trying to learn something here.

Does anyone know the reason behind the sidestand recall?.. i have an early build date 03 and my sidestand, seems to be "sticking" about half way between down and fully up, so I have to physically push it all the way up. I'd like to get everything fixed up.
Thanks Dustin

I don't have, or know where a pdf is.

Good question, my *guess*, a recall has something to do with imminent failure or safety issue, a service bulletin is more like an upgrade.

Does anyone know the reason behind the sidestand recall?
They would break.
If your's has a new side stand, there's an R stamped on it. Can't remember where.
It was claimed to be only the XB9R, but I do know of one XB9S that broke while parked in the garage.

I'm not sure about sidestands breaking on 2003 XB9R's. I thought the reason for the change was because the old stands left the bike unstable since they held it up too close to vertical. The bikes would creep and fall over if you left them idling (almost happened to me once but I caught it just in time). The stands could also be trouble if for some reason you left it pointing on a downhill slope and brushed up against it or a wind gust hit it. I fixed mine instead of getting a replacement.
Mike.
