I posted this previously in the Knowledge Vault but did not get any responses.

The transmission breather hose runs from the top of the trans behind the rear cylinder, loops to the right of the bike then back to the left side of the bike, then it follows the subframe under the seat and just lays horizontally, under the battery. I am not sure of the length but it must be 24 to 36 inches. Is it necessary for it to be so long? I would like to eliminate the hose because it's just in the way.

What I would like to do is cut the hose down to about 3-4 inches then clamp on an inverted U pipe to it so it vents but won't get water in it when it rains. Anyone see any problems with this? Has anyone done anything similar?

no i have not. but the engineers must have had a good reason for including 2 feet of hose under there. that would be 10,000 feet for a years production. you can bet they would have spent money elsewhere if they thought the breather hose unnecessary.

Good answer except if it was mandated by the EPA.
In that case, like the snorkel, I would rather do away with it.

belive it or not, my breather tube melted in half from sitting on the inside of the rear header...a quick fix thou would be to take a length of brake line (or any metal tubing) about 4 - 6 inches and cut your breather tube where it goes past the rear header, and attach both ends of the tube and brake line with hose clamps...another great idea from the guys at the Drummer Factory: )

I have searched the knowledge vault on this and it looks like the one requirement is to make sure the trans breather can breathe freely in and out. Connecting it with a tee to the crankcase breather hose also seems like it would be asking for trouble.

It looks as though I will be able to cut the hose down to just a few inches and put on a small breather filter on top of it. It should fit nicely behind the rear cylinder.
