Has anyone tried to run the bike with the muffler valve open all the time? xb12r

Yes, though I couldn't point out who. You lose low and mid-range, if I recall, as the pipe then functions more along the lines of the Buell Race Can without the noise.

The valve is there for a reason and does a very good job.

I did it and although the sound was fun for a time, the loss down low was in no way worth it. I've since gone back.

you could scrap your stock pipe for a drummer, in which youll get sound and performance...just a thought; )

if I decide I want the sound that badly. Perf gain over stock isn't much especially not to the tune of 400 dollars. On a 9 it wouldn't take much thought but on a 12, all I'm really getting is sound.

It seems you could hack the 12 exhaust and do something like I guess they did with the drummer? I can't find a diagram but isn't the valve in the upstream flow part of the muffler? Couldn't you maybe 'open' up the back half (or quarter or whatever) of the stock can for more sound and possibly better high rpm flow? Just thinking but I'm not about to take a band saw to mine....

Also, I mentioned in another posting that RRW dyno'd a 12S with the valve stuck open and it had a big midrange hole, not pretty.

Boulder have you ridden a 12 with the Drummer on it???If you haven't you might want to seat of the pants dyno is way better then stock I'll tell you that much.I won't have it any other way.The bike pulls much harder and smoother.

I'm sorry, but everytime I read "Muffler valve" I keep thinking of "muffler bearings". Perhaps the valve is an inside joke on all of us, perhaps Erik with his sense of humor won a side bet with someone by actually incorporating "muffler bearings" into a motorcycle.
If that doesn't make any sense to anyone then just ignore the typing and carry on.

I haven't butt dyno'ed, I'm just going off of the dyno sheets, which show at most 2-3 hp but mostly between 1-2 throughout. Thats not much bang for the buck if Bubba's dyno sheets are accurate which I'm going to imagine they are. I'm sure the sound is fantastic, and quite frankly that alone is still enough for me to be considering it, but for the power it sure doesn't seem like that big a return.

Mikej, we used to send newbies down to the parts warehouse to pick up a case of muffler bearings, and a case of 12oz ohms.

Just curious. The drummer for my 12 is on the way. What did you guys do with the cable that goes from the airbox to the exhaust valve when you put on your drummers?

If you have the Race ECM, removing the servo and cables completely is possible. If you have the stock ECM, remove only the cables, otherwise the ECM will send trouble codes constantly as it tries to actuate the valve.

Boulder its making more then that. And the way the dyno reads is that it builds its power way smoother so in return will be more power.Try one out you'll love how light the front end starts to feel.
