Okay, so, more for aesthetics than functionality, I decided I wanted to add some louvers to my translucid airbox. One hole saw and some jacked up measurements later (plus a couple of hours for the stupid cheap drill battery to recharge), I now have them installed. I'm pretty pleased with it. Dirt cheap to do... bought four 2" louvers for about $6 (+ shipping).

My recently chopped inner airbox:

And the louvers installed (4 metal folding tabs on back to hold them in):

Get a K&N man, do away with that evil paper filter as soon as you can.

Newbie here, just wondering about the mesh part right behind your fuel cap. Is that custom? That looks great.

Circusninja, thats the air intake on the 2006+ models. The 2005 and older models get the air from the left scoop going into the frame. The frame is closed off on 06+ models to give more fuel capacity. You can see its closed up on the first pic.

Froggy,

DANG IT! I wanted more fuell and a cool mesh thingy. Would an 06 cover fit on an 05? Probably not, eh?

Ninja- The cover will fit but you will only get the louver, no extra fuel capacity.

Swordsman- I think I might cut out a small portion on the back of the box just to give it more of a skeletonized look??? And where did you use the other 2 vents?

Yes, its just not functional with your stock inner airbox. You can cut it up like in the above pictures.

Nah, I kinda' like the silver finish... fits with the gas cap, IMO.

I ordered 4 louvers because I thought I'd use them all, but they turned out to be a bit larger than I expected. I haven't done anything with the other 2.

One of the reasons I even thought about adding them was that I noticed just how small that front vent really is. It looks decently sized, but the inner airbox actually presses up tight against the entire bottom half, making the stock opening only half the size that it appears to be. I realize that the box probably sucks plenty of air around the edges (it certainly doesn't fit tight), but what the heck. I felt like destroying something beautiful.

The stock filter IS ghastly under there, isn't it? Looks cheap. I DO need a K&N, or something a different color.

Would look good under that smoked airbox IMO and you can't beat the price.

For all of your translucent guys/gals out there, did anyone ever consider lining the inside of your translucent airbox cover with the hexagonal mesh (sim to the screen behind the gas cap)? I bet that'd look SICK and give dimension to the bike. I went with solid black on my 08 because i was leery of the clear plastics and their tendency to fog/scratch.
