I searched the forums, but couldn`t find an answer to my problem.

I currently live in Tokyo and purchased an XB12ss in 2007. I`m planning on returning to the states (California) in the near future.

Does anyone have any experience shipping a Buell to the US?

Many HD's ship bikes overseas for customers...maybe one in CA would know what are the best practices.

It might have to meet California emissions standards to be licensed and US standards to be imported. You ought to contact the factory to see what they can certify. There also may be DOT differences - reflectors, etc. that need to conform.

Shipping will be easy, registration will be tough.

I've worked with several folks the last year and it GENERALLY is always cheaper to ditch the bike and buy another.

The factory does not do any "crossing political boundaries" certifications. . . such as "this bike brought from Japan has been modified to meet C.A.R.B." and so forth. They are not allowed to.

Yeah... it MIGHT be gray-marketable as some sort of "parts-built" custom. My boss has a CBR250RR (think 4-cyl 250cc liquid cooled), an NSR... can't remember what else. All registered but he had to sell his soul to the devil.

I think it started as dis-membering the bike and shipping the engine in one box, the frame and wheels in another and the electrical goodies in another - 3 customs forms, 3 separate dates - and THEN I think it was first registered in another state... along with other shenanigans. I think newer VINs won't work.

Painful experience every time I hear about it.

And the Honda dealers COULDN'T help him or Honda would cut them off at the knees - (although the dealers LOVE the bikes)

Oi Chikusho, you should join gaijinriders.com and post your problem there. A few guys are in the second hand bike trade and might know. You should join GR anyways, I could do with another Bueller.

Paul,

I did post a question and received few replies.

Al told me that getting a bike registered in California is almost impossible.

The bike is only two years old so I called the dealer to setup an appointment to have it assessed.

This is a nightmare. I would never of bought a Buell or gone to school here if I had known this in the beginning.

Oh well, live and learn.
