For the same investment, a 289 V8 will NEVER make as much power as a 351 V8.

Add to that, for the same investment, the 351 will ALWAYS have more usable power than a 289.

Higher reving = narrow torque range = LESS USABLE POWER. Compare the torque of a 600 cc 4 cylinder vs. the XB12...

Bottom line: For those engines with the same number of cylinders, the greater the displacement, the WIDER and HIGHER the torque range AND greater power. That's the physics of it.

Different story if you have engines of different number of cylinders or cycles. If it was a 900cc, 4 cylinder, two stroke, I'd be ALL over that!

Was the 389 still a small block? I always like the "underdog" small blocks over the big blocks... It's too easy to make power in a large block. ; )

I love my 12 it has lot's of usable power I tried many 9's and loved them too. I went with the 12 because I first fell in love with a X1 with the race kit on so in my head I needed the 1203 motor in the bike I wanted. I have to say the 9 is the only buell that accidentally wheelied shifting into second without even trying. I might not have the right technique with my 12 or I'm trying too hard but it doesn't happen.

I'm making over 500 horses with a 281. A blower is the ultimate equalizer. It was a lot cheaper than that ls3 vette, that's for sure. Now if ford had a larger engine options, i'd have been all over that. I'd still like to have the corvette, but then everyone would expect it to be fast. There's a certain amount of satisfaction you get when you make a car fast as opposed to buying a fast car.

You need to shift faster or get back on the gas faster. If you shift at redline and get right back on it, it won't pull the front wheel? Maybe your clutch is slipping. I'd expect a 12 to wheelie easier than my 9.

I bought an 03 9R. My son kept stealing it so I went to buy another one. I bought a 12R. We now fight over who gets the 9R as we both prefer it.

Lemme bottom line it, ok?

BIGGER IS BETTER1

It's just the American Way.
Am I right, my brothers?

Personally, I found the flatter torque curve of the twelve, when properly equipped with K+N air filter and Drummer pipe, to make riding a bit easier, especially for the rider that weighs over two hundred pounds.

Key thing to remember if you get the Twelve: don't think that you are going to pass Glitch or Hammer or Trac96ker and such like on their Nines.

It just don't work that way.

Was the 389 still a small block technically it's a mid block. Pontiacs used the same block for all the v8s. When all the other kids wanted chevy, ford, or mopar I was the Pontiac kid. Now I have a Buell, go figure...

I'll bet no one needs to tell him that. I'm sure that decision was made based on the fact that the 1125R was coming out, and the XB9R just doesn't sell as well as the XB12R. (At least I think so. I've never seen numbers to back that up.)

Size matters, regardless of how much difference it actually is.

lessee , there are 6 versions of the 12 motor & 1 - 9 version. seems like the motor CO. is missing an opportunity to diversify, but as the old saying goes.... you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink !

My dealer doesn't even bother carrying the 9's any more. All they order is 12's. Actually a 9 might make sense for me. I'll never come anywhere near the top end of either one. Since the 9 spools up quicker I'd guess that it is more responsive down in low to middle of the torque range.

I'll most likely get a 12 since that is what is available and I'll love it but a 9 would probable do me just as well.

Well, can't get anything until the first of the year. Till then I'll save my pennies and go to the dealership to fondle the floor models.

It'll either be a 12Ss or 12Scg. Still not sure which.

Overlay the torque values across the rpm span between the 9 and the 12.

That will answer any question you have about going to a smaller displacement...

There may be a question of difference in mass, but I would bet that it's very close as they share the same basic architecture.
