im going to get my headers ceramic coated before summer heats up too much, and i thought getting the muffler done to would be a good idea. i had some bad experiences with the bike getting hot and pinging like crazy last summer, so ceramic coating as much as i can seems worth a shot. i have a drummer on there and i'd like to keep the stainless end cap on there and get the rest coated black like im getting the headers done. does anyone know if this can be done? im not sure how the ceramic process works, can they choose which areas to coat, or what? if anyone has done this before it would be good to hear about it. cheers, ajay | ||

You just want to rub it in that you're looking at more riding as we here are heading into winter. I'm trying to figure out if I should take the bike out this evening when it's 9/48° right now and heading to 2/26° on the return. | ||

Have the can powdercoated in a high temp powder. With PC you can mask off parts that you don't want PC'd. That's what I did. | ||

I'm struggling to visualize how coating the muffler'd address your pinging problem. That muffler runs pretty danged cool, and any residual muffler heat dissipates rapidly out in the open. Regardless, it'll look nice, and the coated header'll help isolate exhaust heat from the cylinders, and your leg, albeit only very slightly. I have noticed that the ceramic coat turns a bit soft when hot, so is cosmetically vulnerable to gravel peppering down there. It doesn't remain pretty for very long. If you look at the (smallish) pic in my profile, you can see how the ceramic coating looks on the header of an old (but not forgotten) XB9S. Its a nice upgrade. | ||

My Micron runs pretty cool, but then again its not the same material as the stock pipe. I also don't see how it would affect pinging. Your best bet would be to check the timing, its possible its too advanced from the factory.  | ||

Acejay, I (GrandStandDesigns.com) work with ceramics and powders every day. With out question, the header pipes need to be ceramic coated because of the heat generated by the exhaust gas at the header. The muffler can be coated with either, but generally the powder is more durable and resistant to being sandblasted away by road debris coming from the front tire. BOTH can be masked off so the stainless end cap is not exposed. Call me if you have any questions. Here to help. Pete 732-722-2955 | ||

I have my Micron muffler black ceramic coated but it is really only for the look. If I'd wanted it they could have left the tips stainless (a a cost), so I guess they could do the same with the Drummer. Mufflers are coated externally only, so not the same advantage as coated headers. With a Drummer you could possibly check to see if the end cap can be taken of without disturbing the packing. That would be easy to coat and would preserve the good looking end cap. | ||

thanks guys. the bike pings when it gets stuck in traffic, i would think all the heat from the muffler rises up, which does not help this. ive never stuck my hand on the hot muffler so i couldn't say how hot it gets. i know coating the headers will help, and figured it wont hurt to do the muffler aswell. also the paint has come off the left side where my breather vents, so im looking for a coating thats resistant to the exhaust fumes/grease. the timing issue i might look into if it becomes a problem again this year. this is good, i should be able to get what im after then. ajay | ||

I'm not sure but I think the end cap will dis color from the heat applied during the coating process. I'm not sure how hot it gets but if it gets hotter that 600 F it will change colors. You can buff it back if you have a buffing will and some buffing compound. | ||

I run the ceramic headers (silver) from American Sport Bike and a black jet-coated stock muffler on my 9SX. Looks great, but the over all change has been the heat given off by the exhaust; it's now cooler on the right side than the left side! Had em on for about two months now and have no complaints. My stock muffler was looking like crap and I didn't think painting it would be a long term solution for it. Headers had some bluing (which I didn't mind) but was also developing some surface pitting and it was hard to keep them bronze-ish looking. Silver pipes look fantastic though! Haven't discovered any rock chips in em either. And I've been known to take the 'road less travelled' more than once too. (I really need a damn dirt bike before I take my Buell out stump-jumping and rock-hopping again! I think it's a Uly Jr.) |
