The Japs have no problem with calling a 953cc bike a Z1000. Also a 853cc bike a ZX9R. Why doesnt Buell call a bike with 983cc an XB10? Didnt Erik learn how to round in school? Or is this Japanese math that we need to learn? What do you think? |

I've always thought that was a marketing flaw. Since the thing came out, I've always thought of it as a 900, even though I know better. And then I thought of the 883 to 1200 progression of the Sportsters. It should have been an XB1, full stop. Now joined now by an XB1.2. Dot.com trendy, I think. But too late now. Maybe next time they'll ask me before they just go and do something. |

X-Brace I think. If you look down at the frame from the top with the airbox removed you can see an X shaped brace that's centered at the upper shock mount. My guess on the sizing is that the 9 name compliments the middleweight classification of the bike. Also, the 9 name exaggerates the size difference between the 9 and the 12. Offering a 10 and a 12 would make them both seem large and possibly to close together. Now, if we could only figure out the official wording behind the R and the S . . . IIRC, XB = X-Blade (name of the frame?) |

there are several manufacturers that round down on their cc's...Sporty's are 1203, the line os Suzuki cruisers are 805, but they are referred to as 800s...granted those are minor differences, but the practice does exist... Besides, XB9 does sound better than XB10 |

Heck, I wish they had called it an "XB6", just to keep all the squids that can't seem to understand that displacement is only one of many aspects determining horsepower from wondering why a 1000cc bike does not produce 160 horses. Just call the XB9 an XB6, and the XB12 the XB6R. If the squids ask, just explain "well, it's actually 998 cc's, but when you factor in the exhaust bearing correction factor, it's 600cc's" and walk away. edited by reepicheep on October 09, 2003 |

Careful, with that new exhaust valve the term exhaust or muffler bearing may have found new significance. |

Just for a little thinker, I once did a search for military hardware bearing the name of Firebolt, since it was pointed out to me that the other Buells (sans Blast) were named after planes (maybe not after, literally, but shared names with them). The only military hardware I could come up with called 'Firebolt' was a rocket-propelled cruise missile that topped Mach 4. Nice, eh? As to the R and S, obviously the insurance companies think it's Race and Street. Morons. |

How about XB X (X being roman numeral for 10). It sounds pretty good when spoken. I think XB was also an air force ID for experimental bomber models back in the 50s/60s. |
