I unwrapped the exhaust on my 9R. went for a ride anda fairly hard one at that. My fellow rider told me my front pipe was cherry red but my back one wasnt.

WTF?

BTW its 94*F today here in Daytona, so excuse me while I go carve up some roast leg of idiot for a sammich.

check your plugs first. when unburnt fuel exits the chamber it ignites , bad plugs = unburnt fuel = cherry red exhaust... obviously could have other issues but this is a good starting point.

Please explain that statement for me..seems to me unburnt fuel has no way to ignite after it leaves the combustion chamber!!! What am I missing here?? If spark plug isn't firing, what is there that would ignite fuel??

simple. have you ever seen a motor run without any type of exhaust manifold? flames shoot from the exhaust port. the internal combustion engine is extremely inefficient. this fuel is much harder to burn under compression. when the compresion is released (exhaust valve open) the fuel burns much easier, hence the now lager flamefront making his header glow. thats as simple as it can be explained. i can go into more detail if you'd like.

the glowing manifold is usually caused by a rich condition but can be caused by an overly lean condition also. therefore, check plugs first. good starrrtingggg point.

ASE certified in automotive engine performance. sorry if most of my examples pertain to cars. concepts are usually the same.

thats kind of like saying the pipes blue because there is to much unburnt fuel, when in actuality it is because of a lean condition causing to much heat.

and without a header there is no back pressure to contain the flame in the combustion chamber where it is supposed to be. thats why it flames non stop out of the head.
but alas, i digress. i can already see this is going to turn into an interesting debate soon enough... (where's the smiley eating the popcorn when i want it)

alright then,..... have you ever seen flames shoot out of the back of a tailpipe? .... better? same theory!.... please try not to be a smart ass if you don't know what you are talking about.

and pipes blue a lot faster when raw fuel is introduced. or not enough fuel. or even the wrong heat range spark plug. : )

no-rice, you obviously have SOME knowledge on this, any suggestions for ferrisbueller?

I did change the plugs back 2 months ago before then there was no problem.

use a spark tester for HEI from autozone or napa(or other) ... it looks like a spark plug but actually jumps an almost 3/4" gap inside... hook it to the spark plug wire or coil on one side and ground via the alligator clamp. crank engine. look for clean and even sparks on both cyl's. if ok proceed to checking fuel system.
(assuming you gapped plugs correctly)

cant help much here but if answers to these specific qustions are given, i can walk you through it.
i have yet to even tear off my airbox. this bike stuff is new to me.

anyone know if there is a scrhader valve to check fuel psi?

injector static resistance?

standard return system with fuel regulator and check vavle @ pump?

bosch style injectors?

fuel filter location and maintenence?

sorry if these suggestions don't help. aparrently no one here who really knows these things wants to chime in.

ok, lets retry this since i know nothing.

have you ever noticed that it is more likely a vehicle with a straight pipe that flames out the tail pipe? usually not something you see with GOOD baffles in a motorcycle exhaust or mufflers on a car. not impossable, but it has to be WAY off.

there have been more than a few people that have noticed there front headers glowing on the xb's. now a decent percentage of them also had aftermarket exhaust, maybe a high flow air cleaner and a fair amount of the time a stock computer. so... that would make a person look more towards the lean side. more air flow because of the pipe and filter but no more fuel because of the stock computer tune.

i dont remember any of them having a race ecm or such and stock exhaust, which would be more fuel, no extra airflow as in to rich.

having said this, it also happens on bone stock ones. but on that subject we all know that the factory setting is as lean as they feel they can safely make them from the factory to meet emissions and such.

i guess i wonder to what extent yours was glowing. light up the night red or just a noticable glow from it when you are in the dark?

there has also been plenty of debate on what header wrap does to our xb pipes. i have yet to see one disintegrate from it, but you look at some wrapped car headers that dont even have to be all that old and they just seem to crumble from the extra heat staying trapped in.

like i said that is all debatable, but it makes a person wonder what kind of changes that extra heat the pipe is getting because of no cool airflow over it does to the metals structure. i am no scientist, but i do know that enough heat can weaken metal even though its outward appearance still looks ok.

like i said its all debatable, but it makes a person wonder

it was late afternoon still awesome daylight about. All I saw was a slight red glow from the inside out with the glassy metalic-ness because of the metal.

If it helps I do have a swiss cheesed inner airbox, a K&N, race ECM and the silver factory race can.

I know that when i took off all the clamps that held the wrapping on the front top clamp seemed extra brittle and the wrapping on the front pipe was extremely fragile. While the wrap on the rear pipe had most all of its tensile strength. I'll recheck the plug gaps and I have to find my spark checker.

I took the wrapping off because I was looking at profiles and a certain red XB12R had polished pipes and I've been bored since school is out for summer.
