Congrats on the purchase Jdorp_

I have an '03 Lightning as well......and Love it!

Any sponsor here is a Great place to get parts.
First you should get a Service manual. They're Great and extremely useful!

Oil is a long....over-discussed....issue on this board. I use Syn3 and have had no problems. Others will chime in on this one....for sure.

Also....you need to make sure that you have the right wheel bearings on the '03. The proper ones should be Orange and Not Black.

Another potential issue is the drive belt on the '03s. But I'll let someone else handle that issue for you. Gentleman_jon has a lot of insight on the belt issue. Hopefully he'll chime in soon.

Ohhhhhh Jon...............?????

Now get out there and ride!!!!

I have an 03 XB9R that I rode a good 5K miles before turning it into a racebike.

Use the search function here - almost any problem you can imagine has been discussed - or discussed to DEATH!

Also - get the parts manual too for your bike. It's REALLY helpful when you face a parts dude who is clueless or busy.

Also - find a dealer who "gets" Buells. A good screening test is to ask them about "their" Buell group/club/riders. If they don't stay in touch with the folks they sold their bikes - if they don't RIDE with their customers, I'd find another dealer.

Nice!
Welcome, I also was over AudiWorld for two years.
I just hit 3k miles on my bike today and at this point I'm loving it way more than the S4.
I may not be singing the same song in the heart of winter, but right now I'm not worried...

Definitely get the shop manual. These bikes are pretty easy to work on and the manual is very detailed about how to do the maintenance. You'll learn about your bike and will save tons of cash due to the high price of Harley dealers.

Justin,

Perhaps you should take a look at this recent thread on the joys and challenges of owning an '03 Buell.

About half way down the thread you will find my oft posted '03 notes.

Enjoy the ride!!
