Whats better? Micron Serpent-which comes with after-market headers also, Or like a D&D, Jardine, or Drummer which are just slip ons? Anything besides the price, Thanks Bradley

Better is in the eye and ear of the beholder. There are lots of reasons why people choose one muffler vs another. After the pipe comparison testing on May 6th/7th, you'll have data to make your own decisions without having to rely on others definition of "better".

WARNING THREAD JACK IN PROGRESS

Al,

I've tried a couple different PMs and one email no luck :-)

I want the front of my Uly to look like yours. I can't find the pics anymore of what you did, but I remember that I liked it. Thanks.

Sometimes, it depends on what you are looking for.
better might be the most HP even if it is at the redline?
better might be midrange power?
better might be sound?
better might be looks?
better might be durability?
better might be price?

Lots of "betters" out there. None are right, none are wrong.
I am looking forward to the test results. Too bad it is planned on the ride to the U.P weekend or I would be there to see it happen.

The slip on's are great for the price, for a little more money the Micron rocks! Whatever you choose, you MUST have the bike tuned properly (Directlink) to reap the full benefit and have a perfect runner. Just throwing parts on the bike is only doing half the job. The FI has to be re-tuned properly, and now we have the means to do it.

Go look at Al and Terry's Dyno runs with the Micron.... awsome

Daves has it right. What are YOU looking for??? I, for one, look for rideability. I like big HP numbers too but in the end where do YOU ride YOUR bike?? Probably on the street just like I do. Where is the tach when you ride in the normal way you ride on the street? Where is the pipe you want making the most power and torque??

I agree the pipe shootout will answer alot of questions for alot of folks. Should be good.

Daves, you have yourself a grand ol' time in my beautifull home state!!!

Thanks, I am looking for looks, hp, and sound. I don't do track days or try to race everyone i can...ok maybe i do. but i'm looking for something other then stock. By tuning after the installment, are you talking about Dyno testing and then configuring the bike? thanks, Bradley

"I am looking for looks, hp, and sound".

Well, you left weight, durability, and cost out of that, so I guess that narrows it down a little.

Look at this plot:

Those are XB9s done on the same dyno, same operator, same tuner.

Which pipe is better? The red or the blue?

The red one is titanium, with gorgeous welds and a cool looking multipiece header, but you can't run the chin cowl and it needs repacking now and again. The blue one is shinier and more durable but heavier stainless steel with hydroformed header pipes, average looking welds, and it lets you use the chin cowl. Which is better?

They both sound great but don't sound like each other. Which is better?

The red one costs almost over 1.5 times what the blue one does. Most folks can't disregard that in their definition of "better".

No disrespect intended, I'm just trying to further illustrate the point that Daves and I were making earlier. Better wears many faces.

You'll have the facts in a few weeks to make your choice based on what is better to YOU.

If you get your bike into a configuration that a map already exists for, you can likely but a pre-canned map from me or Daves. If you put it into a non-"standard" configuration, you'll need to get it mapped or you're leaving a lot of power and/or driveability, and possibly engine durability, on the table. You'll need to buy a directlink key for that at minimum, and likely either a map or a relatively expensive dyno tune. A decent mapping job with directlink takes about and hour of prep time and 4 hours of tuning time with an experienced tuner. A custom map can be expensive to develop.

Greg,
I'd sent an email response to you from work with pictures, I guess maybe your spam filter got it or something. I'm sending one from my home account now. I think you wanted to get to here: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142838/166292.html?1139981981

What is red and blue? Force vs. Micron? I like the line of the blue much better than the red. Who knows....

Force does not equal ti-force. Just for the record.

Hey Al, just curious....why do hp and torque not cross at 5252 on those runs?

it looks like they cross at 6520 or so.

Unless my math is rustier than I thought hp= (torque x rpms)/5252.
This should force the lines to cross at 5252.

Not trying to pick on you or anything Al, : ) Just curious.

That threw me off too. They don't "cross" at 5252 because power and torque are each on different scales for that dyno. If you look at the actual numbers for power and torque they appear to be the same at ~5252rpm.

Lets not miss the forest for the trees here... that's an XB9 making 91 horsepower at the *rear* *wheel*. With nice broad flat torque curves. That's outstanding... for *either* pipe.

Ditto. The first time I looked at the chart I thought it was an XB12. ~90 at the wheel on an XB9 is very impressive. My XB12 has never put down more than 92 to the wheel, although it's never been dynoed with proper fuel control.

I want!

I cant wait to see it in action, and on my bike even. Hmmmm, Al, do you think we can do the Micron last and just forget to take it off?
