I'd fiddle with this, but I don't have photoshop, so I know one of you could do much better.

Every now and then I get to looking at the Sunset Orange wheels and I can't help but wonder how they'd look on my bike (with its' 03 orange graphics)... Could one of you be so kind? Thanks.

Here is a first stab at it. It is getting late and my eyes are getting bleery. It is tougher than it first appears.

Man how do you guys do that? Thats impressive. I downloaded the demo to try and design some logo's for the bike, and I was more effective using ms paint!

That does look good! I've got a white 9 with orange graphics, and I might do the wheel color change.

Yeah... photoshop is a very neat little tool.

I "think" the best way to do that is to use the magnetic lasso tool to make selections of the wheels, group them all together as a layer and then ramp the colors around. You could also take those shapes that you get from the lasso tool, resize the picture of the wheel and twist/rotate so it's the right perspective, then apply the lasso'd shapes to it and copy, then paste them on the pic of the bike.

I prefer the first method myself, because then you can ramp them to any color you'd like. It works for body work as well. Somewhere I have a firebolt with each bodywork piece as a layer and I can change it to any color I prefer. IMO, Orange is the best but it's got to be "just" the right orange or it's just not good.

Yeah, that one is a lot better!

The best tool to use in PhotoShop is the Color Replacement Tool - only found in later versions.

Then you need to work with layers, and masking, and some tedious cleanup work if you don't get it right the first time.

Damn... That does look pretty good...

Can you change the color of the frame/swingarm to the color of the 12 frames?

Yup, pretty easily. I have to run right now but if no one does it i'll mock it up later on for you guys.

I used a combo of stuff in Photoshop, for the mockup above i just sampled the Sunset Orange wheel color, painted a rough outline over both wheels using 4 different layers than applied various masking and color overlay features like 'multiply' and 'color'. Lots of different ways to 'colorize' something depending on what the base contains. In this instance it was easy to overlay the color then blend to look sorta real. Could be better but it was just a fast attempt.

Gray frame would be same process for me, lay down a new layer of color then blend with the bike pic below until the tones are correct and shading looks OK to the eye.

I love my job, I do this crap all day long : )

I used to do it all day long as well, now I just tell people to do it all day long. But sometimes it's nice to get my hands dirty as well.

Blackxb9: yeah, i've been a CD for the past few years too but I still 'get my hands dirty' daily. too much fun not to.

i actually just went back out on my own in June after co-founding a design and tech consultancy in Boston where i was also the design discipline lead for the past 3.5yrs. so happy i had a family full of creatives. best gig there is.

Midknyte: here's that other mockup with the Sunset heel guards. Def too much orange for me and I could have masked a little better but i think this will give you an idea what it would look like. i'm a monochromatic-all-black kinda guy but the orange wheels alone to accent the decals would look pretty cool.

M1: i'll bang out that dark frame when i get another sec and post too

That's what gets me thinking of it - if the wheels would match the orange graphics.
Those heel guards are turnin me on. Look pretty sick.

I was looking at something similar the other day, I thought the orange wheels might look good on my white 03 xb9r with the orange lettering.
I was also wondering of the color would match. It's not like my silver wheels look bad anyway.

DAMN it does look good. I ran some prints of the orange wheels & heels over to Walgreens on glossy photo paper. Looks real and real good. Something to consider come time for new tires. Thanks again.
