was just wondering, how many people were having problems with there transmission? i have over 18k miles on my 04 xb12r. about one thousand miles ago i had to bring it into the dealer because i could not get the bike to shift past 2nd gear. turned out that the shifter cam assembly and shifter fork assembly was messed up.the dealer fixed it.ran great. last night i went for a ride and the same thing happened again.i called the dealer this morning and they said to bring it back so they could take a look at it. the mechanic was really cool about it. barely had it off of my truck and he was checking it out.he then put it right on his lift, and went to work on it. i hope to here from them by monday to see what is wrong with it. lonexb |

(shrug) Perhaps on the repair they didn't torque to specs? Sucks nonetheless to be without your bike and having a recurring tranny problem. lets wait and see what they say |

So far with 14,500 miles on mine and it has not had any trans problems. Shifts clunky like it always has. |

Well, now that your mention it... This is the XB board, I have an M2, but I have been chasing a mysterious clunking noise in the transmission area for 2-3 weeks. It happens just before you come to a stop in gear and with the clutch lever pulled. With the rear wheel off the ground, it you put it in gear at idle it happens more or less continuously but I can't localize the clunks except to the general area of the tranny. I thought I had the noise traced to slap in the primary chain but now I don't think I was right about that. The primary chain is adjusted down to 1/2" or less at the tightest spot but clunk does not go away unless the drive belt is overtightened a little (i.e., set at least as tight as the service manual calls for which, as experiences in the KV have proven, is way too tight). I have the upgraded chain tensioner on order (this is a 2000 M2 with 3,200 miles on it) and I'm going to pull and inspect the transmission while I'm in there. My chain tensioner is not broken now (I had it out to check), it is not causing the noise. As I install the new chain tensioner I'm also going to pull the transmission and inspect it. I want to meet all of those pieces anyway. When I pulled the clutch pack and inspected the shifting detents and stuff, everything looked and appeared to work normal, no missing clips or screws, backed out pins, etc., and I have the updated detent plate (part number ends in 006A). I'd like to think I can wind up with a reliable tuber before too much longer. I define reliable as my not being afraid to get on it and ride it all day. As soon as the bike is ready I want to try doing that. Jack |

I just started having trouble with mine. It is getting stuck in fourth gear, and sometimes it grinds when I'm going from neutral to first. I have 3,000 miles on it now and it is still under warranty. Don't know what to expect for down time though. |

There are a couple of things that could be the cause. A snap ring that falls off, pins that backs out, a detent plate keeper that comes off, etc. If I could get mine checked under warranty I'd probably do that. It only takes 15 minutes to get the transmission out, the delay will be if parts needed are not in stock. Jack |

Jack, Thanks for easing my mind. Do you think it's worth taking into the dealer, or is it easy enough to check myself? |

the five week wait for me was not just for the parts. i had to wait two weeks just to get it in the dealer. Jackbequick, on the xb there is no trap door in the transmission. you have to pull the motor and tranny out and split the case to get inside the transmission. Brewtus what model motorcycle are you on? |

Thanks Lonexb, I don't know a lot about Buells and that is about M2's. We do need to figure out what bike it is. This is the XB board. But I would probably take it to the dealer if it was gong to be done under warranty and in a reasonable amount of time. Especially if it was an XB. Jack |

LoneXB, I'm on a 03XB9. Made an appointment for tomorrow. The service manager told me about the shifter mechanism on the primary chain side, so I'm just going to keep my fingers crossed and hope for the best. |

Took the bike in this morning and it was done this afternoon!! Never had that experience at ANY dealer. The tech said it was the shifter spring. Said he has seen a few now, so it may be something to watch for. |
