I've developed a leaking fork seal, so I'm replacing hardware: dust and oil seals and bushings. I've been trusting the old, reliable FSM but noticed one thing I wanted to be sure before I closed things up.

The FSM sayeth to install the oil seal with the sealing spring facing the dust seal, AKA DOWN, so the sealing spring stays dry. When I removed the original, factory-installed oil seal, I noted it was installed with the sealing spring facing UP, so the sealing spring stays wet. I'm perfectly OK thinking the factory got it wrong and installed them incorrectly (which would also explain leaking seals), but all evidence is that the FSM instruction is wrong.

What say the BadWeb?

Twin Motorcycles in the Netherlands. They post detailed photos on Buell services they do on Facebook almost every day. LOTS of good info in those.

I had neglected to check Twin Motorcycles...and I religiously review their Facebook posts for good info. Thanks for the reminder.

All info so far indicates the FSM is flawed.

Spring is definitely in the oil! Manual is incorrect.
