I have an 09 CR. It was charging good...for a while.

This is a post I put up earlier, thinking my voltage reg was a problem:

I was riding the bike the other day and notice that the volts (I watch them religiously)were low (12.9-13.5) with the high beam on. If I turned the high beam off, it would migrate between 13.1 and 13.8. (harness plugged in at highway speeds around 4-5000prm)

When I get home I do all the stator checks. Resistance checks pass (all 3 legs to engine case, and then 1-2,2-3,1-3). I do my ac output test, and it tests at 38vac at 3000rpm warm, and 40vac cold.

For 09 models that is a little low, but from the research I did, it is with range for 08 models, so it should still give me 14.1 volts. I can't get over 13.5 (I get an ocassional jump to 13.7).

Here is a weird one for you. With the charging system "fix" bypassed, the bike will charge 13.9-14.1V at idle, but as soon as you bring the rpm's up , the charge drops. The higher the rpm, the lower the output.

I do have the rotor upgrade (installed over the winter months), and at the end of last season I got a new stator, charging harness and relay and Voltage regulator. (under factory warranty). I can't have more then 1500kms on this set up.

I have done tests with the harness plugged in , and removed. Same results.

So the only thing I can't seem to find in the manual is how to test the voltage regulator.

I have since done all the checks that were necessary to check the voltage regulator, and it all passed. The amps out put is within spec, all the diodes are fine.

I did the current draw test, and found that the total draw on the system was 20.1 amps with both fans on, high beam on and engine at 3000rpm.

I put everything back together (minus the charging relay) and took if for a ride. during the beginning of the ride, the voltage fluctuated between 13.5 and 14.0V. Hurray!!!

By the end of the ride the voltage was down to 12.9, and might get to 13.

I re-checked everything, and the only thing that was suspect was the ac out put on the stator was 38Vac. Can the problem be in the rotor, or is it in the stator? I know the volts are low for a 09 stator, but it is within spec for an 08.

I would say there is no problem and the charging system as is now configured with the harness fix removed is operating like it should.

It is normal for the voltage to read higher right after starting because the system has to charge the battery for a while to put back in energy it lost during starting.

After the battery reaches full charge the voltage regulator has to shunt the excess voltage. That is why the voltage reads lower than 14 VDC and will fluctuate up and down slightly as loads demands vary. Voltages lower than 12.0 or higher than 14.5 would be cause for concern. What you are seeing is normal.

You've done all the hard work. Enjoy the ride and stop worrying about the voltages.

I'm kind of an expert on charging system for GS Suzuki's and have developed a "Quick Test" for a sanity check and have revised the classic Phase A of the Sta tor pages.

It sound to me like you have dirty connections between the battery and the R/R. It doesn't take much. The fold back voltage (lover volts higher RPM is classic for bad connections)

Most of this generally applies to your bikes as they are all PM alternator charging systems.

Measure the voltage drops between your battery and R/R at max charging RPM. (5K)
