I would take the new motor and enjoy the ride. Have HD keep the stator off of the 08 motor and reinstall it in you new motor. Problem solved and a great bike will be ready to ride! The way I see it, you got the bike dirt cheap and even if you include to 2 grand, you are still getting a good deal. My R has 15000 on it and it still runs great. At least so far anyway.

my r has 27k miles and other than clutch leak and 2 burned up stators, no major repairs. Have replaced 1 belt, front bearings, front brake pads, rear brake pads and countless tires : ) though I think my clutch is starting to slip, I'll take a look at it at my next service interval if it doesn't crap out on my in the mean time. Bought it new 2 years ago, it has been a good bike only left me stranded twice, once was the stator, and the other was a broken belt. I'd buy the new motor and maybe swap stator and rotor from your 08 motor, good luck with your decision.

Russmannnn,

Odd, I went through this EXACT same thing!!

I took the $4500 they offered me towards it and had them put in a 2010 Engine. I am still making payments on the $2000 I owe
(I have about $500 left).

They would not give me the money only to put it towards repairs (it's a total scam).

I had years left on my Extended Warranty but they said once they done this, they have fulfilled their obligation. So I only had a 3 month warranty on the new engine..

So here's the kicker, this Monday My 5th stator went out and I'm on my own.

I have no complaints about my dealership as they have been great to me, but I will never buy anything from Harley again....ever!

I've had my bike for 1.5 years and it spent a total of 198 days (that's over 6 months) in the shop.

Every single one was related to charging issues and STILL it's not fixed.

If I had it to do all over again, I would have parted it out and bought something reliable like an XB, but that's my two cents.

I wish you luck in whatever you choose.

Here's what it looked like for me

"What bike, of this caliber, can you get for $9K?"

New options with a real warranty, Probably any 600, left over GSXR750, left over Daytona 675, Z1000, Street Triple (R version too), left over 1000's, the list goes on and on...Used options (which his bike is, and still will be after the repairs) would seem endless for $9K...

Good luck with your decision, been there done that...Shoot me a PM if you want...

Take the new 10 motor using 08 stator and rotor.

Sell me the new stator as you part out the rest.

Why does an 08 stator cover need to be reused?

Thecowboyblack

How long ago did you get your new motor? HOw many miles did you get out of it until the first stator went?

It sounds like I am getting one of the last few crate motors they have, and that it is also the latest version. I dont know if that will help me any.

Wouldn't having the dealer install the 08 stator and rotor in the 10 motor mess up the new motor warranty? (whatever it might be) It might not but I feel like HD might not even wanna touch that with a 10ft pole.

I would ask your dealer about this. If they're on board, for 2 grand I would without a doubt go that route.

How many people run 08 stators on their 09 and 10's?

My new motor has ZERO WARRANTY.

They made it sound like there wasent many, but that could also just been them not wanting to relese one.

You would be in the same boat as me then lol.

Russ since your paying for a new motor and services for a new motor you should ask 2 keep your old motor and part it out. even if you only make 500 bucks of that old motor is better than nothing.

so it sounds to me the harley is giving up $4500 to fix the bike which way you want?

I would contact EBR and see what the price of a new motor would be. If its $X and with labor cost of $X and you have no money out of your pocket I would do that.

If EBR has no motor or has a 2009 motor for a lot of money, I would get the 2010 motor and pay the $2000 out of pocket and ride the snot out of the bike

I don't think they can legally get away without warrantying your new engine for some minimum time frame. Obviously if the thing blows up within 30 days through no fault of your own, they have provided you with an egregiously faulty part. I doubt there is a small claims judge what wouldn't award you proper consideration in such a case.

>>> Sounds like you'll have about $9K into it from your pocket...original price, extended warranty, $2K to finish the job and get it out of the shop.

>>> What bike, of this caliber, can you get for $9K?

I don't think that's the best way to look at his situation. He's only looking at spending another $2K to get the bike back on the street.

It would be a no brainer for me.

I do agree with Bill (Reepicheep) though. It doesn't seem ethical to limit your choice as they have done and to not cover the entire repair. You might check with a consumer advocacy organization/attorney on that. They may be able to help.

There's another way to look at this -- Some people are really enthusiastic about the 2008 charging system ... so sell your 2008 charging system to them. You should be able to sell your 2008 charging system for a lot more than the cost of getting the 1190RS rotor conversion done on your new 2010 motor:

http://www.erikbuellracing.com/store/models/1125r/ 2009-2010-charging-system-rotor-modification.html

Here's what I would do:

New motor costs $5150, H-D pays $4500 means that you start off out of pocket for $650. You could recoup a lot of that by selling your 2008 stator, rotor, and stator cover to the guys who want the 2008 charging system for their late model bikes.

When installing the new engine, I'd spend about $200 including shipping for the EBR 1190RS rotor modification/exchange, and keep the 2010 stator.

Then I'd DIY the engine replacement and avoid spending the $2000. The other option is to pay the dealer to do it.

If you get to keep the old motor for parts, that would be great -- you could part it out and recoup some of your costs. My guess is that they'll want to confiscate the old engine as part of the deal.

Has anyone used the EBR rotor mod, and if so how is it working?

All the work has to be done at the dealer otherwise the motor would be put in in the garage.

I'd say do what it takes to get her good.
Then again, I paid $13.3k for Loretta and have no regrets whatsoever.

I will NOT ride an IL4 and have never ridden a twin like this.

Either the 08 charging system or the EBR assembly gives you minimal power with dependable operation.
The drilled 09+ rotor MAY make the higher output alternator reliable, don't really know yet.
We DO know EBR is shipping that setup in the 1190RS.

My vote is "make her work".

"Has anyone used the EBR rotor mod, and if so how is it working?"

I have the 1190RS rotor on my 2009 1125R. No complaints. I got the first one for the 1125 application as sort of a combined favor/experiment from friends at EBR, before they decided to do the rotor exchange service.

Zac makes a good point about IL4 vs. twins.

Big torquey twins are definitely more fun to ride in the range of real-world RPMs that we have to live in. IL4 that make the same HP usually don't match the torque, so you have to maintain RPM to maintain performance, which is a pain on the street.

I've been a big fan of BMWs all my life -- the R-bike boxer twins, that is. IME the BMW IL4 K-bikes have always lacked character. I just never found them appealing.

That said, I could live with the new BMW IL4 superbike if someone forced me to. ; )

Me to I really like the S1000's but there is just no way of matching the 1125r for 7 grand least my thoughts.

Also love big twins my self for all the reasons already listed, as well as personality.
