I have drug my peg on the Uly once when coming in too hot on the downhill decreasing radius turn on S------- Spur Rd.FB & Tastroman should know the exact corner I'm talking about.I ride hard & my chicken strips dissapear quickly but peg dragging on the street is very rare for me. |

Dfishman, I've been known to wick it up a little going up that road but I always take my time coming down it. |

I haven't put one down on the Buells yet (plenty of toes, but no pegs yet)...but the FLHP was a different story.
Bought new boards every season.

You should not be dragging your toes on anything. Put the balls of your feet on the pegs not your arches.
Tried that today. Made it damned hard to shift. |

Which is why you drop your toe, shift, and return the ball of your foot to the peg.
Shouldn't be shifting mid-turn anyway...and if you do it a lot, go with a GP shift pattern. |

Ski and Ratbuell, razorblades for floorboards is a sign that you know what you're doing... instant recognition for someone like me. The LEO's who ride well here at work, have the boards sharp enough to shave with and the supports underneath ground away. The rest think something's wrong when it happens.
I moved lots of stuff around on the old ironhead, and eventually just gave up. Things need to drag on the ground with it... otherwise I'd end up hurting myself on it.  |

Being a Bull rider seems to make me kinda hard of FLH floorboards too.
I did a test group ride with the local dealership a few years ago and THEY WERE PISSED!!  |

They used to make me do four or five runs on my FLHP through every battletrax course as soon as it was set up. Saved on lime - people could just follow my floorboard scars on the pavement, to get through the course. |

I love spraying sparks on those behind me!  The FLTR has had the rear tire off the ground at Deal's gap. Was grinding the crap out of the right foot board frame. I had taken my left hand off the bars to wave at a couple of crotch rocket riders who were just up in the woods watching everybody. Well as soon as I let up on the bars the bike went wide so I grabbed the bars and counter steered her hard to correct my moment of stupidity which as described raised the rear tire off. As I was sliding the tail end around it seemed like slow motion and right when I didn't need to rotate anymore I counter steered the other way and grabbed a handful of throttle and she stood up and launched around the corner!! I wish one of those guys had that on video cause nobody seems to believe me!
Now I ride with Depend's on! |

A couple of years back my eldest son was here with his in-laws. He on his RK and them on two Ultra's. His brother-in-law was home on leave from the USAF and borrowed his dad's former RK for the trip. He had sold his Honda VR1000.
They asked me to lead them around the Smoky Mountain area as they were staying in Robbinsville NC. It was beautiful weather and cruising around 129, Cherohala, and 28 are some of the fun things to do, so we did. I lead by watching my mirrors and by listening.
I started to run a mellow speed that they could all handle when I noticed brother-in-law pushing me. So I stepped it up. I saw two of them fade back at the first 'drag', then he was pushing me more. So I wicked it up just a little more and watched the spark show in my mirrors. The third guy faded back and brother-in-law crowded up on every straight stretch. So I eased in a little more and found myself a good distance ahead of him, then backed off turning into an overlook.
Brother-in-law, laughing his ass off, said that is all this pig can muster in the corners. He said it appears that I had something left with my Uly, so I asked how he could tell. He said you are not even leaning in or hanging off at all.
He ground the crap out of those boards, and brackets, and frame, and what ever else hangs under there.
It was a fun day with the big HDs. Fireworks for everyone!
Greg......is that the only reason for the Depends? |

Yes! It's a 100% free upgrade, and takes about 2 minutes to reverse the shift pattern on every air cooled Buell since the post-boomerang shifter tubers! |

We altered the game at the WV Buell Rally.....made it into "flaming fire wood jenga". Dangerous game at best. Instead of pulling chunks of firewood out, we continued stacking until it fell over. .....twas but a hot sombich! |

Was quite a fire wasn't it?
Yeah, my yard is a little muddy, I took off this morning on a wet road on a brand new rear, scary.
Luckily I ran out of wheel weights so the old nicely broken in front is still on there. on the way home it was dry so I scrubbed it in pretty good. Tire feels pretty good, I just hope it lests.
I will finish off that chicken strip soon, but I a bit insane. |

I normally favor my left side, but not on the Uly. I often wondered about that and then it hit me. Ever notice the jugs on the Uly engine are off center and to the right? This puts the center of gravity to the right of the bike - if it's empty of gas. But because the gas tank is larger on the left due to the cylinders more on the right, I imagine that balances things out when the bike is full. Then I wondered, why is the bike like this? All I can come up with is because of that big primary drive and it's side case. This creates a shift lever that's way out there, making Erik and company shift the motor to the right of center. thus the uneven leaning capabilities between right and left. Just a theory |

I do the same thing.....drag left much more so than right. I figured it was just me being scared of leaning to the right side. |

I think I'm going to swap tires on the Uly and 1125R.
Scorpions are getting flat-spotted and the Corsa IIIs are still fresh.
I spend more seat time on the Uly and its tires will look good on Loretta. No chicken strips.
I have 3/4-1" strips on the Corsa IIIs but none on the Scorpion Syncs.
I feel more comfy leaning hard to the left than the right.
No idea why... |

I'm more comfortable leaning right than left. I've heard it has to do with hand controls, and arm extension vs. throttle grip, etc. But, since we're exhibiting different preferences here I'm gonna go with "rider preference". I know I used to do better to the left...but since '08 when I was rebuilt, my left upper leg doesn't flex as well as my right so I can't hang off to the left as well as I can to the right. |

The Scorpion Syncs have a rather large round carcass compared to the Pilot Road II. It is about equal to the D616 in carcass shape. The Sync and 616 are easier to get to the edge. |

The original question reminded me of my first track day:
I thought for sure I was going to lean over too far, the tires would lose traction, and the bike and I would tumble in an awkward fashion. Only after seeing pictures of myself did I realize that I was a pussy.
I've gotten considerably more comfortable with "spirited" riding since that track day almost 4 years ago, but have still never dragged a knee and rarely drag pegs. |

For what it is worth. I have had a number of road bikes and some VERY expensive sports bikes as well. None have been as easy, once set up right, to ride hard as the Uly.
A tall, weird, ugly pain in the ass bike but once you get on it and ride most anything is forgiven. |

Oh, absolutely. The Uly is a VERY good handling bike. But it is so tall that it always seemed pretty scary to think about dragging a peg... The same is true of my Multistrada. Something about the height (and I'm only 5-8 myself).
FWIW, I haven't dragged a peg on anything since my '73 RD350...

Now Doc, We know better! When the deer hits the bike/rider, bike tips over while moving. When tipped over while moving.....pegs drag!.....
