hi guys,

in order to ease my withdrawal syndrome (see my latest post) i pushed my Uly out of the garage and started her up to let her run for a while...- what a lovely noise again

whilst pushing i heard quiet a bit of squeaks coming from the belt or the FS tensioner - even louder when pushing backwards...is this normal or should i worry???

let me know if you can...
could it have been caused by the bike standing for a month on the garage now???

what can i do?
thx Lars

Sounds normal to me. Mine does it sometimes, not so much now with 40k on the current belt.

When's riding season again over there?

thanks Xbimmer for quick reply...

as for the riding season question...i hope that i can get out for a short run this sunday...snow is melting and temperature should be at 8 degrees C and sunshine...

i think my missus wants to take her F650 for an outing too...

i sprayed a bit of WD40 lubricant on the pully bearing - maybe that will help a bit..

If you're feeling ambitious maybe you could pull the wheel and check out the belt, and the idler while unloaded, just to be sure.

Have a good ride and be careful, ice does suck...

And keep in mind WD40 is a solvent and Water Displacer, not really a lubricant.

Also keep in mind that you should NOT push a Buell outside and "start it up", unless you're going to go for a ride.

Not good for the plugs, or for the charging system, or for moisture in the oil.

It sucks...but don't even thumb the starter unless you can ride for at least 20-30 minutes.

For the squeaking belt...I hear it all the time pushing 'em at work. Especially if it's cold - think cold leather shoes and how they squeak as they flex. You're effectively bending a very cold piece of plastic. Granted, it's designed to bend...but it's still (a form of) plastic fibers.

Mine did it last week when the temps were around 20F. It even did it going up my drive way. Gave me a WTF moment, but all was well on the road.

My rear bearing squeaked just prior to failure.

Mine did it today at 50 degrees F. I pushed that damn bike up a hill after trying unsuccessfully to bump start it. Did the same thing with my Harley. My quads are burning!

I hear you need at least 11.5 volts for the ECM to work, so if you battery is too dead to start the bike, I don't think I will try to push start.

Sunday after Christmas I rode out with a friend to pickup an 1125 they had given his Son for Christmas. They had parked it in the neighbors garage back in November. When we went to start it and he battery was dead so he hooked up a battery charger (with enough current to start the bike). The bike started right up, but when they turned off the battery charger the bike would die.

After letting it run for around 10 minutes the battery voltage was high enough to allow the ECM to work without the charger turned on.
I would think the alternator would have put out enough voltage to run the bike, but I guess the load of the battery was enough to drag down the voltage until it had run for about 10 minutes after it started.

You would need a long hill to bump start it with a dead battery, as you would have to coast long enough for the battery to charge up enough to start the ECM, plus more power to run the fuel pump and injectors. Bumping with a good battery charge is still a little hard due to the high compression of the motor, but once you get the hang of it, its not bad.

Man, you ain't kidding. The battery registered 12V, but it couldn't turn over - big twins, man. The Harley (96 cubic inch) coughed a cloud of white smoke out the of the breather and that was it. I used to bump-start my 600cc I-4 all the time like it was nothing.

I'm re-charging them right now and will try tomorrow or Monday. Thanks for the input, guys. Hope you have Monday off.

Mine squeaks frequently as I push it around the garage adding stuff to it and soldering bits on but never really riding it (finally warmed up after I left home to go to work).

I'm gonna 2nd Towpro and say that anything at or under 12v on the volt meter is a crap shoot when trying to start. I had a 12.2v batt (after 8-10 hrs of charge. It was a bad batt) that would *just barely* tick over but if it didn't nail it on the first try, you were DIW.

I wish I could find someone to hack and add a volt meter option to the digital display on my instrument panel. I have an aftermarket one mounted but being able to button through the clock and mileage/tripmeter displays to a volt readout would be cool.

Maybe in the 2011 Uly...

My first new bike was a '76 Honda 750F, I could actually reach down to the kickstarter and start it with my arm, usually in one throw. Damn that bike was reliable. Used it for my down payment on my Beemer in '79, wish I kept it though, didn't make much difference in the payments.

Why does it look like you have a crack in your dashboard? Did you drill too far? ; )

It wasn't there when I first did the mod.

Then one day I noticed the crack after a wheelie. Oops : )

Towpro,
The 1125's might be different but the XB's will run WELL below 11.5 volts.
At the 25th homecoming we had a bike that had a failing charging system.
We thought we were going to have to tow it, I suggested he unplug the headlight then bump start it (it didn't have enough to crank over).
The bike fired up and made it all the way back to the hotel at least 30 miles away.
We had folks in front and behind to ride "cover" for him as it was a night ride.

The squeak might just be the belt rubbing on the sheet metal "gravel guard", so check that first.
The guard almost rubs on the side of the belt normally, to keep rocks from getting caught up in the pulley and damaging the belt.
If your belt position varies at all on the pulley, then the guard might be rubbing a bit more than usual.
I have also noticed mine rubs more when pushing the bike backwards, not sure why.
As long as the guard is not rubbing with any real force, it appears to be ok.
You could always push out the guard with a little bending, if that is the source of your noise and it bothers you enough.
