Anybody ever drop the gear ratio with that other drive sprocket I have heard about? I would consider a lower overall gear reduction...mostly for a lower first gear. Anybody? Was it a DIY? Costs? Very much appreciate your feedback.

The thing to do is to replace the primary sprockets with an XB9 set.
I think I read here that it lowers it so that the overall ratio is about the same as stock fourth.
Personally, I love the way it's geared as delivered.

$200. Well worth it.

As the big Uly continues to wear-in, it just keeps getting smoother and smoother in the low revs. The thing now cruises lazily, when I have a rare mind for that pace, at 2K rpm smoothly as can be. I can see wanting a reduced 1st gear, but I sure do enjoy high gear right where it is. It's too bad we can't use a derailleur on the primary drive.

Blake, are you saying your bike cruises smoothly at only 2K rpm in 5th gear? Wow I look forward to the day! How many miles on your motor to get to this stage?
My 09 XT has 4K miles and does not smooth out until nearly 4K rpm, meaning I never can use 5th until past 70 mph.
For this reason I was considering gearing down, but maybe I should wait to rack up more miles to see if it smooths out.

Mike, exactly correct. Bike is at ~4K miles and still smoothing out. Primary chain on the just a little loose side; not sure if that helps or not.

I was like you, when new, I couldn't stand to use 5th gear until the revs got above 65 MPH, but man has the thing smoothed out.

I started to notice the change around 3,000 miles or so.

I cruise all day at 2000-2500RPM in 5th. I hate to rev it any higher than that, it just wastes gas.

Thank you! I will continue to put miles on my 09 and see just how much I might like the long-legged stock gearing...but I am a backroads guy. Low is pretty fast! So far so good and I appreciate knowing that the gearing change is not too big a deal. NOT the 15 minutes to drop my primary gear on my DR650 for a mountain day...and back again for road days. So I need to take some more time as a Buelly to see if a more permanent change is warranted. Thanks again...

I'll admit that I'd like a lower 1st gear for the gnarlier stuff, but out in the wide-open spaces of New Mexico I would hate to be stuck in 4th gear. That's why I've stayed with the stock primary. Six-speed, anyone?

Just for a lower 1st, y'unnerstand. For "normal" riding one could always start in 2nd gear.

Prolly never happen though, and I'm OK with that.

One of the Aussie sponsors here sells a primary chain kit that gives even taller gearing than the 12, I have been tempted to install that.
