Mark, my wheel bearings crapped out on my uly on the Alcan in 06. I had it trucked to Prince George HD and followed it on a greyhound bus.
I doubt that you could find a more devoted and helpful group of people anywhere than those folks at PG HD.
They arranged for towing, shipping, bus ride, and hotel reservations. They received
the bike late on a friday afternoon of a three day holiday weekend and had me on the road again in a couple of hours with new bearings and tires. All this while they were swamped with work and working short handed. I've never met finer folks.
You might want to carry an extra belt with you, mine broke a day or two after the wheel bearings were replaced. I don't know if the bad bearings weakened the belt or not but I was glad I was carrying a spare. Belts are easy to change on the side of the road.
Please give my best wishes to the folks at PG HD , especially Karen.

Good Luck John

Mark- where are you? One other possibility came to mind this morning- a broken muffler strap. That might let the muffler hit against the mounts while the engine's idling which could cause your noise. Whatever it is, I hope you've gotten someplace and gotten it fixed by now.

Standing by for the next update...

+1 on buying a new belt when you have rear bearing failure. My rear bearings have failed 3 times. Each time the belt broke shortly thereafter. The latest belt failed last week, happened 300 miles after installing a new set of rears.

Update: I have extended my ferry ride to Bellingham, WA. I'm going to get HOG roadside assistance to take me to Bellevue, WA at Eastside HD. I have the bearing ordered and it will arrive on Thursday and I will arrive on Friday. I am going this route because I couldn't work out transportation to Prince George. Thanks for the heads up on the belt. I will call the dealer about it too.

Hopefully Mark will post an update today. Sounds like maybe it turned out to be bad rear wheel bearings after all?

Guys I'm getting off the boat in Bellingham, WA. The ferry was delayed 12 hours for an engine problem. I'll be calling HOG roadside assistance to take me to Eastside HD in Bellevue, WA. I am scheduled for service at 9:00 on Saturday. Based on 2 other inspections I believe I only have a wheel bearing problem. I asked the dealer about replacing the belt and they won't do it under warranty unless it is broken. I will probably have it done anyway.

If you do decide to do it make sure you get your old belt back. Perfect spare for the just in case.

Update:

Got the bearings replaced in Bellevue, Washington. Great shop, very nice people and they let me take a XL1200R out for demo.

Bike was repaired and washed in about an hour. The old bearing had about 1/8 inch of play, I got real lucky. They looked at the belt and felt it was okay as I did.

I'm in Billings, Montana tonight on my way back to Ohio. Plan is to be back Wednesday.

Thanks again for all the help,

Mark

Glad to hear it, as I'm sure everyone is. Hope the rest of your journey has a bit less of that type of "adventure."

Be safe!

So Mark, the knock/rattle you were hearing at idle was the rear wheel bouncing around due to bad bearings? If so, I'd say you are VERY lucky.

Glad you got it fixed up with no problems.

Hi Guys:

I made it home at 2:15 today Ohio time.

Unfortunately, my riding partner did not make it. Yesterday we rode through about 300 miles of strong rain. My friend told me at a gas stop that he had a vibration in his footpegs on his R1200GS. He motioned me over about 30 miles later into a rest stop. We called my wife who got us the number for the closest BMW dealer, 150 miles away. We tried to ride on, but 10 miles later pulled off again to call roadside assistance. They said we were not covered for the tow even though he should be covered until 2010.

We rode on to the dealer in Iowa City. We had looked the bike over several times with no obvious problems showing. Just as we pulled into the dealer's driveway, I noticed his rear wheel covered in oil, an obvious final drive problem. Bike will be repaired by Thursday so I went on without my friend. I'm so thankful his bike made it to the dealer.

I barely made it home on my rear tire. 8379 miles on a Diablo Strada for an Alaska trip is just enough. Pieces of rubber were on my rear fender. It looks like someone scratched the tread center with a screwdriver.

So glad to be home, thanks for all the help and support.

Wolfridgerider: I'll try to make the Cobra meeting if possible. (if I get the tire replaced by then)

That tire has a enough life left in it to make it to Columbus.... you may not make it home....

But as long as you make the meeting...... LOL

Hope you can make and glad to see you made it home.

Wish I'd have picked up this thread a few days sooner. I live in Bellinhgam and my wife works at the coffee shop down by the where the ferry docks. I remember her commenting on the late boat.

Don't know if I could have done anything but if would have been worth a try.
