Well apparently I didn't know what I was in for when I posted about losing my exhaust nuts recently. I got replacements, slapped 'em on, and on the way home from Turkey Day in Knoxville I noticed the same loud exhaust tone as before. Stopped to check it out, and one of the new nuts was gone. Grrr! This was my mistake, though: It was cold and raining and I just said screw it, we're continuing on! Got home, went to investigate and found that one of the two studs is snapped off just inside the hole, nothing to grab onto like some others have had. There's lots of reading to be found on Badweb about it, but man this sucks! | ||

EVERY time I change a header (tuber or XB), I go by the book spec. EVERY time, I'm amazed at how "not tight" they feel when torqued to spec. So far, though (and I bought my first Buell in '99)....I have yet to lose a nut or stud. Knock on wood. | ||

I lost mine when the dealership replaced the nut that had fallen off back in September/October. Since it happened as a result of them working on the bike, they fixed it gratis, which was awesome. They said it happens pretty frequently though, even to their guys who work on the bikes all the time. It took a couple of hours to fix it, including dropping the bike off, filling out paperwork, etc. | ||

Ratbuell is right on. A good torque wrench is worth much more than the purchase price. I've had my Craftsman for years. | ||

New to forum, and don't have a Ulysses yet, but still have an 07 1200R Sportster. The Sporty has the same problem with these flange nuts loosening constantly. I resolved the issue (I think) by replacing HD's flange nuts with steel (not nylon)lock nuts, torqued to spec, 96-120 inch/lbs, from the hardware store. I don't know if the studs will come out if I ever try removing the lock nuts, maybe so. Some Sporty owners use star washers under HD flange nuts with success. Hoping to pick up a new Uly in spring, gotta sell Sporty first. | ||

Use the Jims tool to remove the old stud, and check the rest of the exhaust supports. Usually the sheared studs are a result of a missing bolt or chopped up bushing or bracket somewhere else on the system. NOOOOOOOO EAAAAASSSSSSYYYYY OOUUUUUUUTTTSSSSS!!!!! (in my best creepy voice) | ||

ARP makes a chromolly carb stud that should never break. Summit racing carries them, just match up the length with the stockers. | ||
