Ok, you've parked the bike, put the kick stand down and are preparing to dismount, do you turn the handle bar...left? straight? right?
Obviously to lock it the answer is left, but does anyone regularly do something else? Is there any advantage to be had from turning the handlebar/wheel a different direction than the norm (ex. weight distribution on the stand, or weird hill)? Just curious...and bored.

If you have a 06-07 Uly I don't think it matters since it only turns a few degrees...: )

Turn it to the left, it puts more weight on the kickstand that way.

+1 to what Jlance said- that's what they teach you in MSF. It makes the bike less likely to roll forward and fold up the kickstand.

Right, I know the correct answer, but have seen pics here on Badweb suggesting otherwise. Just curious as to why those who do it...do it.

Mostly turn them left, but in the garage @ home, I turn them right.

I also like to park with the valve stems @ 6 o'clock too. ; )

If I'm leaving the bike (ie locking it) then to the left for obvious reasons.
If I've stopped at a safe (no-theft) place, let's say High Beech,Epping forest-well known tea-hut for bikers, then I'll take the key out but leave the steering straight, partly 'cos my helmet rests nicely on the airbox cover/handlebar.

Not worthy of another thread but kind of related (sorry for the hijack/off-topic):
Just something you made me think of,unless the bike is fully loaded for touring (in which case I'll mount from the right-hopping on tip toe before sliding on and then dismounting to the right again) I'll mount from the left and then dismount to the right. This probably has to do with my damaged left heel and is slightly easier with the handlebars turned to the left. (There we are,it was related to the original question after all,phew-I must be bored as well Uly1080)

I have an 06 Uly with the 08 trees so there is a difference between left and right. That being said, I leave my bars pointing dead ahead so my cables don't get stressed and so my panties don't get in a bunch and they can cover both left and right bar controls.

"Ok, you've parked the bike, put the kick stand down and are preparing to dismount, do you turn the handle bar...left? straight? right?"

Following that... Do you mount/dismount on the left (throw right leg over) or Right (throw left leg over)?

I've always found it easier to throw the left leg over from the right side.

I must admit I'm shocked. Much like I was at the "do you wipe from the front or back" discussion on one of my deployments, as I thought the answer was both obvious and unanimous. I've never done anything but throw the right leg over from the left to get on, and then reverse the process to get off. I had no idea there was any other way. Then again I am approximately the height of a garden nome.

All the way left, locked, with my helmet hanging off the right grip.

I mount/dismount with the bars at right lock then always turn to left to lock the steering. I used to step on the left peg to get on/off but I guess the suspension has sagged enough that I don't have to do that anymore, unless there's something strapped to the seat or triple tail.

I turn the bars to the right and mount/dismount from the left. Depending on the slope, I may then straighten out the bars or turn them to the left whichever makes the bike more stable and upright.
Parking on an uphill slope with a load of camping gear on the back can be tricky because the front wheel tries to leave the ground. In that case the old beer can under the kick stand will help even out the weight by standind it up a little more.

YMMV

Shouldn't this have been an April 1st post?

Most of the time my Uly sits in my shop not on the side stand at all:

Baxley sport chocks are WONDERFUL!

But, when I'm away from home, I turn the bars to the left.

+1 on the left

Away from home; same reason as Jinance & Hughlysses.

At home; because it works best with a Cycle Slider.

I don't have the luxury of unlimited garage space. My Sliders allow me to fit the Uly, an Ultra & two cars in a two car garage.

Straight.... because my bikini top bike cover will pull on the right mirror and be tight if bars are not straight. Cover is tight fit on the Uly but keeps the sun and dust off the baby.

Other question is... When checking oil level on the side stand should be bars be straight or to left?

Chadhargis, whats with all the shine on your Uly? It looks like its clean or something. I didn't think we were allowed to wash 'um. I thought about doing that to mine but I was afraid that the Ulypolice would revoke my card.

Chad's Uly doesn't get out much.

Chad only rides "quality" miles with his bikes. : D

HAAAAA

Evil minded man.

It's not a toddler, its a baby camel.... with little baby camel toes.

Yeah....that's the ticket!

Next time, I won't leave the lil buggers with any air holes, that will teach them....the camels I mean.

Chad said he would come out and ride except that he had to iron and fold his underwear and then polish the leaves on all his tropical plants.

I turn my bars to the right because otherwise my arm hits my left mirror as I dismount. If the slope's wrong, I'll turn them back to the left after I'm off.
