Light came on yesterday about 5 miles from home, took the bike out for errands today and filled it up with right at 4 gallons.

Light won't go out now, although after about 10 miles of riding it went off/on three times. "F" ticker is still clocking miles.

Did something else just break?

I've got the same type of issue on mine. I can fill mine up and the light goes off. About 5 - 10 miles it comes on and stays on then will go on/off many times while riding. I think I saw here before that some owners have had the issue and it was wiring issues. Checked my wires and still the same thing. No problems just have to watch the mileage for when to fill up. I normally fill up between 160 and 180 with between 3.5 - 4 gal.

The wires at issue are inside the fuel tank (part of the fuel pump.) If the wires get too damaged; the fuel pump has to be replaced.

I had a similar problem with mine. The wire from the fuel pump was not making good contact and the computer was throwing the light. You may want to check the wire between the pump and the ECM.

Thanks for the tips, guys. I'm gonna risk jinxing it but I think I've fixed it.

Went out yesterday and disconnected the battery for a moment, light went out and didn't come back on when I reconnected the cable. Started up the bike, light came back on...

Rode around like that for a bit with it changing on/off, it wouldn't be so bad if the damned fuel ticker didn't keep displaying.

Met my wife for lunch and in the parking lot I found the fuel pump connector (I assumed) and disconnected it while the bike was idling. Sure enough the pump shut down and so did the engine, when I looked there was a lot of grit on the female end of the plug.

I couldn't see the male end so I brushed away and blew out the female end and reconnected it. Lo and behold, bike fired up without the light and it's stayed off for about 30 miles since.

Since the connector is in a pretty bad place subject to contamination I'm going to do a better job of cleaning it this weekend and waterproof-tape it. Hopefully that was my problem and not the internal wiring some have posted about...

Well that didn't fix it...

It was fine for a couple days but I kept seeing the "F" clock displayed but not the light. Then after a while the "F" clock would zero back and stay there until I changed it back to odometer display.

Caught it a couple of times flashing the light very briefly before displaying the above sequence. Rode the 100 miles back from San Bernardino Sunday with no incident, Monday did it again once.

Sad part is I have a dealer less than 10 miles away that I can't trust, and Glendale Buell who I do trust is 40 miles away. I'm thinking of pulling the fuel pump myself, once again to fix a problem that I should be able to trust my purchasing dealer to warranty repair.

It sounds like the low fuel sensor. Its a $10 or less part. My bike was doing the some thing you are describing and was a easy fix.
Why was it a easy fix? Warranty.
When I get home I will look the part # up for you and post it here.

To fix it, you will need to pull the fuel pump and replace the sensor. You should replace the screen while you are in there.
The fuel pump can be removed with out taking the swing arm off. Draining the gas is a pain, so run as much out as possible before you start.

I'll get that number for ya as soon as I get home if it hasen't been figured out before then.

That didn't take long : )

I had the same thing happen to me.

The part that went bad is #P0789.K (SENSOR, low level)

If your dealer orders that for you have them order part # P0806.K (FILTER, fuel, internal) at the same time. Since you have it out you should just go ahead and replace it.

+1 on what Wolf said.....

I had the same issue and continued riding it like you xbimmer and it finally just stayed on constantly. I actually put black electrical tape over the indicator. After 2 months and 6k miles I finally took it in to the dealer and it was a warranty replacement. The dealer replaced the entire fuel pump assembly rather than what Wolf is stating about the sensor.

Anyway, it is a known warranty issue and the dealers are quick to replace them at no charge.

Thanks for the advice guys! Maybe I can get them to take care of it without keeping and riding my bike for a week to verify the problem, especially since it's intermittent and sporadic.

If not I'll go on BadWebber sage advice and fix it myself anyway!

Well I spent 5 hours there yesterday, they diagnosed the fuel pump and cooling fan as bad but no parts in stock so because I couldn't leave the bike I had to pay a deposit to order the parts for my warranty repair... When I go back I'll have to wait another "5 hours at least" while somebody I don't know tears apart the back of my bike to replace something I can see.

At this point and only 42k on a bike with the problems I've had I'm having more than second thoughts. Whining over.

Yep, a $75 deposit. Seems they had a concern that they would order the parts and I wouldn't be back for the repairs.

Never had to do that before, even at my inept dealer...
