My 2000 M2 starting dripping fuel out of the fuel petcock. Only on the “on” position…not off or res. There are some older threads that point me in the direction of an aftermarket valve. My question: has anyone replaced the o-ring on the rotary selector? The o-rings I have in my shop are round and thick where the oem ring appeares squared edges and thin. I’ve tried uploading photos but the website says I need to shrink them… |

Simple O-ring would have been great, but this is more of a square ring with groves in it. Dangit! I thought about trying, then found a very close replacement for the entire thing, which is not that expensive. Used a lot on dirt bikes; 62046-94Y P0300.8 Fuel Valve Petcock, Universal 3/8" Right Side S2, S3 1997 1998, M2 Paioli 2147021 2129176, Also Acerbis 2044230998 – Not exact but fits. Suggest also replacing the O-ring where it mounts to the tank; 62158-94Y P0301.8 O-Ring, Fuel Valve If you do find the O-ring, let us know. Expect all these are made of Vinton. Hard to say if they came in that shape, or if it started round and over the course of the past 25 years it just formed to the shape of the petcock internals. I know this doesn't answer your question, but when I got my bike the petcock leaked. I ordered one of the acerbis replacements, but while I was waiting for it to come I pulled the leaking one and rebuilt it with all of the original parts, and 5 years later it's still working perfectly fine. Might be worth a try. |

Thanks 99cyclone, Hmmm. Now which one is it? When someone figures that out, post it here. I wish to buy a few. |

The Viton one is 6540K128 25 for $16.40, would that be better for gasoline? |

Disclaimer: I’m not a chemist. From the internet: Buna vs. Viton: Which Seal for Your Application? As a sealing option, the crucial difference between Buna and Viton is the temperature range the materials function in. Viton is the choice over Buna for high-temperature applications. Viton seals hold indefinitely at temperatures up to 400°F and can last up to 48 hours at temperatures up to 600°F. Buna is effective to 250°F. However, it can effectively seal mechanical objects at low temperatures to –22°F. Viton seals are rendered ineffective at temperatures below 5°F, with the material becoming hard and inflexible. |

Old o-ring vs replacements. Put that the new squared o-ring in this morning. Three rides and multiple operations of the fuel supply valve. So far, so good. O ring is slightly larger than original. Used a bit of grease to get the selector back in without rolling the o ring over the lip. Had to make sure valve was aligned with selector lever. It can go on two ways…only one is correct. Also, I have a lot of tools, but it was impossible to get an inch-pound torque wrench on the fuel tank screws. I had to use a wobble-end Allen wrench and guess what 25inch pounds feels like. If any of you need one of these o-rings, email me your address to jason.boles@comcast.net and I’ll throw one in the mail free of charge so you don’t have to order 100 like I did.
