I installed an XT rear shock today after pushing the front forks up in the trees over the weekend. Overall lowered the bike about an inch, but gives me a lot more understanding (pun totally intended). I installed Precision Engineering FatBar adapter/risers and AV One OSX fatbar last week so I would have room to raise the forks in the trees.

I rode mine 700 miles from KC to SE OK and added a half quart of oil.

Need to put new tires on (got 12k out of this set!), replace brake pads and change the oil this week when I get another day off.

I rode home the long way, 6 or 8 miles of farm dirt roads.
I really like these TKC-80s.

I'm jealous of those tires. All you need now is a little spray paint to make the wheels match : D.

I looked at it so far.

I'm still amazed at the mileage some are getting out of a set of tires, 12k, I wish!

I hobbled past it on my crutches. My blood pressure meds aren't working as well as they used too. I need to take a ride!!

teeps, I have never gotten more than 4k out of a sportbike rear, granted I do usually ride like a jerk, but I am not doing burnouts with them either...I am blown away the life I have gotten out of this set!

It's the truth man, that blue and black is a killer combination.
And I'm sure from previous descriptions of work you've done to it, that it runs even better than it looks.

Mike, on my 9sx, the brand of oil (even of the same weight) had a pretty significant effect on oil consumption, as did fill level.

Castrol full syn 20w50 filled high, and I'd be approaching a quarter quart in 500 miles. Switch to a more expensive brand full syn 20w50 and fill to the bottom of the range on the stick, and the rate of oil consumption would drop dramatically (though it always burned a little, never a problem so long as you remembered to keep it full).

Second best looking Uly I've ever seen(it's not orange). Pretty cool.....sporty looking. The stance helps there also.

Phelan- How's the handling with the XT rear shock and the standard (but raised in the trees) Uly forks?

I'm about to try the same thing myself. I finally lucked into an XT rear shock and kickstand from a crashed bike. I figure I'll at least try it the way you have yours setup, but ideally I'd get a set of XT forks too, or possibly have mine shortened and reworked by Traction Dynamics.

Unless you have the later trees already, you'll need XT trees as well if you go with XT forks, which isn't a bad thing, since you gain a bit of turning radius. I'm still getting used to the Windham bend fatbars, but handling thus far has been nice, not an issue by any means. It may be how I have the suspension set up at the moment, but I noticed the bike does not wheelie nearly as easily as before, which is probably a good thing : p.

And Vern thanks! That's exactly what I'm going for, is a sportier look, more like a CityX with bags. I'm thinking hard about going with a Flexiglass front fender painted in bedliner and ditching the beak. I also would like to find a flyscreen without windshield holes in it; maybe I can get the Thai guy to make me one in the same translucent blue : ).

Phelan- thanks for the feedback.

The XT's didn't get the offset axle and trees that the 08-up X did to increase the steering lock. I'm pretty sure all years and types of X and XT fork tubes are interchangeable. The 08-up X forks are "fatter", but the upper portion of the fork tube has the same diameter as the earlier skinnier forks where they're clamped in the triple trees. That's how several people have been able to install 08-up triple trees on 06/07 Ulys (to get the increased steering lock) without changing the forks.

Ah, if that's the case, great! I thought it was the forks themselves that were in the way of steering radius. So the newer trees push the forks further out from the steering head?

Yea, if you look at the 2008-up X model, the triple trees hold the fork legs out further from the steering head. The bottom of the fork legs have the axle offset to the rear to maintain the same steering geometry. You can see the axle offset in this pic:

Even though Buell went to the trouble to offset the axle to the rear, at least a couple of guys here have installed 2008-up triple clamps on earlier bikes using the original fork legs and they report no noticeble difference in handling.

Looks like that could lower the front end a slight amount as well, using old legs with new trees.

Mike, what kind of tires are you using that are giving you that kind of mileage?

I have trouble getting 4-5k out of mine...

"Even though Buell went to the trouble to offset the axle to the rear, at least a couple of guys here have installed 2008-up triple clamps on earlier bikes using the original fork legs and they report no noticeable difference in handling"

On my '08 Uly, I replaced the offset lowers on the forks to a set of "straight" ones from an 1125. This reduces the Trail geometry. The Uly has a generous amount of trail and for my riding style the Trail reduction has improved the handling on my bike.

I'm already designing some with shock absorbers and off road treads. I've included a mercury switch that automatically dials 911 if they go past 45 degrees!

Why not install air bags that go off at say.....40 degrees. You may not need to make that 911 call.

Yesterday I put my friend Scott's Drummer on my bike to tune it and dyno it today.

This morning, I watched my bike fall over at idle in the driveway as I was putting my helmet on : (. Bad bike! No!
Busted hand guard and a little rash on the bag. I'll repaint/bedliner the bag, but I'll have to find a right side hand guard, as it is busted bad and missing a piece. I have a spare left side, of course.

I use a set of proper barkbusters with an aluminum chassis that were cheap from Amazon. I'll check the box tonight to see how mine look.

(Unless you want me to dig up the Amazon part reference)
