Need some help with my RSS......

My tank has a split in it, about 2 inches...Anyone know the best way to get it repaired? The paint is perfect and I would like to keep it, so it would match....So far, not much help. Modesto has it at the present time, but their fiberglass guy didn't know anything about them, and was afraid to touch it....Any experts out there to help?

I also picked up some electronic buell RR 1000 fuel units.....for my RSS...does anyone know if they are the same? RR and RSS? Thanks, REX

Built by a close friend of mine a couple years before I bought it from him. He was apparently "unfond" of the stock RS looks (the word 'hidious' may have been overheard, can't remember for sure) plus it was white. If I can get him to ship it to me I'll have all the stock bodywork, which is said to be in perfect, though still unsightly, condition. AL

PS this is one of those times that "in the eye of the beholder" phrase comes into play - I tend to agree with my friend's view, especially the tail section, but the RSS models w/o the flip-up back rest are, to me, stunningly beautiful bikes, even more so in black.

I didn't want to post in the classifieds because I'm not selling the thing, but there's an all original RS 1200 at Jim's Harley Davidson in Yuma, Az. They want to sell it.

If you guys want any info, "SKI", shoot me a mail and I'll get the particulars. Or you can call them direct. If I had the money I'd buy it! I think they want 6 or 7,000 for it. Very low Mi. Something like 3,500 or so...

I've seen that one down at Jim's HD. But I'm looking for an RSS, the RS 1200 down there in Yuma needs some fiberglass work on the front fairing. Last time I talked to Him I think he was asking 7500 for it? Not to sure though, that was like a year ago, so who know's what they are asking now.

Left- that is absolutely fabulous! I've seen pics of your bike somewhere else on the 'net, can't remember where but I liked it enough to copy the pic down to my "Cool Buell" folder on my computer : ) Really a stunning ride, I love it. The turbo is icing on the cake, I bet it's good at testing shoulder-socket integrity ; )

Thanks Tres! I can't take the credit for building it though, Skeeter Todd (NY) built it to the way it is now. My son was riding it last sept. and a couple of the bolts that hold the air chamber on the carb loosened up and fell out & a couple of small washers sucked through the motor and then went through the turbo, and my shoulders have been healing since. Motor is OK, turbo is not. But man, it went like stink up ta then! AL

Rex: Believe it or not the best thing to do is have the tank returned to Buell. They are at this very moment manufacturing me a new tank for my '93 RS1200. DO NOT BUY ONE FROM AIRTECH! At this point I am into that mistake $700.00++. It doesn't have a vent, fittings in bottom wrong size, won't fit over frame tubes. I could go on, but I will not. I took my tank to Illinois Harley/Buell and Ray in service took care of everything. I don't know who he talked to, but after a year of searching for someone to repair my tank he handled this in a day. Shipped to Buell, two days later a phone call inside of tank too far gone to repair. Make me an new one? YES!
Cost is not for sure yet. $450.00 estimate. It will be unpainted but otherwise to original specs. At this point a bargain compared to the other option. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Left, it doesn't matter who built it, possession is 9/10 of the law ; ) Man, really sorry to hear about the turbo sucking a washer. Especially considering the questionable status of Aerocharger these days. Hope you can get her back to normal soon. Have you tried and/or had any luck with contacting Aerocharger?

Dann, your RS looks great in black! I remember reading your story about the tank a while back and seem to remember seeing a few similar stories too. Glad to hear you're closing in on a solution after all this time.

Tres - "questionable" sums that up, it looks like I will need to normally aspirate the RS to get it back in ridable mode. I'll be seeking stock pipes and non-pressure type carb soon. I think I can get an S2 header to work with slight mods to clear the RS frame at rear head area. I'll post in "wanted", hopefully theres some take-offs someone is willing to let go of. I just want to ride it, though having the turbo was a major plus to the Fun Factor. AL

Roger - The S3 pipe will not fit the RS due to interference at the rear head. There was a substantial change of the frame configuration from the S2 to S3, with subsequent re-route of the header. The turbo header I have is actually for the S2, and it had to be clearanced (that's a technical term for whacked with a ball peen hammer) where it goes past the vertical piece of frame just behind the carb. See the right side photo in my post above to see that. Thanks for askin' though! AL

AL, the header i have is for a 99-2k, the one the fits inside the frame rail, i was hoping that maybe you could customize it by adjusting the out side of the header, again with a hammer, at least to get you going, i was kinda thinking that there might be enuff clearence between the frame and the head/pushrod tubes, once adjusted that is.
If you want to try, let me know, consider it pay back(heads up, its cracked in several places, reparable, but cracked)
let me know

One of the funniest stories of Buell, from during the RR1000 era, happened in Germany. Seems the GMTA scenario of Buell and TUV engineers was working good until a "bit" of a misunderstanding.

Great times!

Germany and Japan figured prominently in the history of Buell.

Roger - I looked it over a bit and it looks to me like the S3 pipe would run directly into the frame, and would take a LOT of rework to fit, if at all. There's not enough room to get the pipe between the motor and frame. I had another idea which is to fabricate a flange and pipe which would adapt a muffler to the turbo header, where the turbo normally mounts to the front of the motor. If that doesn't work, I'll be back to the S2 pipe search. Thanks for thinking of me . AL

Al, before ditching the turbo you might give http://www.mrturbo.com a ring. They sell turbo kits (no Harley or Buell applications), but I've read they also do turbo service (I have a CX500 turbo and got this info from one of the CXT boards, so it's second-hand). They may be able to rebuild your unit or come up with a suitable replacement.

Basti, love those pics! Back in '92 I test rode an RS1200 at a local H-D dealership. It was a new one that they had not been able to sell for years (when I looked at it, it was "discounted" to 12,500.00). While I was talking to them, I asked what had happened to the RR1000 they had displayed there for years. Turns out they sold it to an 18-year-old. They said on his first ride, he rode it down to the end of the parking lot and promptly laid it down trying to turn it around. They said the side of it was a mess. Ouch!

No problem Al! Sounds like Jim has a good lead for you as well. And if neither of those pan out, I found another possible source:

http://www.turbo-power.com/index.html

These guys can apparently re-build damaged turbos from a core (they've done it for some of the owners of the old Japanese turbo bikes).

==I don't want to ditch the turbo - without it my bike's just a kinda odd-ball S2==

LOL! Well it's a cool-looking bike anyway, but the turbo pushes it into the "awesome" zone : )
