Pengy,
I'd not heard that before but I like it!
If it wasn't so late I'd head out to the garage and verify.
I have tomorrow off so lots of time to gaze.

Just rode 400 miles, mostly highway. 44.6 MPG with the Mikuni. On the return trip, high winds. Mostly stable, better than the 'Lectra-Glide in pursuit. Love those on and off ramps!

44.6 mpg....FOUL! Everyone knows it is all down hill from Springfield Il. back to St. Louis. And high winds. Again, everyone knows those leg fairings are like sails on a ship. And beside that, you speedo is off by a least 5-8%. Crank that ol S2T up to about a hundred and let it cruise for about an hour. I bet it drops all the way down to say...... 40. : )

100MPH? On I55? It was a giant speed trap from city limits to city limits! I'd be lucky to make it 15 miles let alone 15 minutes! Remember when I was prohibited from driving in certain IL counties?? S2. I had to take the 'sails' off, knee clearance. Anyway, most of that mileage was done between 70-80MPH. Under 3000RPM is too much vibration. 157 on the trip odo and it still hadn't hit reserve! Midgrade 89 octane. The mileage was going to Springfield---uphill! Downhill without so much wind? 45 easy!! Could use a Penske and some Race Tech springs and valves though...

Remind me to tell you the story of when I was caught doing 97 in a 50 just north of Peoria. The officer had a newspaper reporter in the cruiser with him, doing a write up on what people gave for excuses for speeding. I made the paper with mine! Lucky for me the officer was good friends with my passenger.

Well, I've reached the stage where the S2 feels like MY bike now. After ten years with the Sporty, it was feeling too ...different. Went for a great rip up Mt. Baker after swapping bikes with Funjimmy for his brand new RC51. Got MY bike back for the ride down and I MUCH prefer it! Going from the RC51 to the S2 made me feel at home on the S2 finally.
And I took the bike in to Deeley's House of Buell for a free upgrade on the front exhaust bracket. Gotta like that for support: built ten years ago this month, I think, and BMC is still doing comp work.

Yes, Blake. I have indeed joined the club, courtesy of FMJ and his irresistable offer(s). The tale of its delivery to Canada, while in need of some organizing, is one of my funnier stories to date. You have to "back-link" from here:http://www.badweatherbikers.com/cgibin/discus/discus.cgi Something about me and figures of authority. I should re-write that thread in proper sequence some day.
Don't seem to go any faster but the safety margin has increased dramatically. Stability is a great thing.
Inspired my riding bud to trade in his Kawi ZRX for an RC51, though. (He's also got an S1, so its all about V-twins.)
The Sporty remains in the stable as my "character bike" but it's gonna need some big money on suspension now that the S2 sets a bench mark (not that it'll get to that level but it better get closer.)
But its Tbolteric now.

Anyone know Buell brakes really well?

Specifically I'm interested to know the master cylinder sizes of the front brakes on the S2 and the Nissin equipped S3. I'm thinking to put the S3's Nissin caliper on the S2 but don't want to do it if it'll result in a less powerful brake.ie: if the S2's m/c piston is too large.

Am impressed by the Nissin brake's power, but primarily would like to take advantage of more readily available replacement pads for Nissin calipers. Have already made the rotor mod so there won't be any clearance issues.

Anyone know off hand what the master cylinder sizes are?

tia,
Lornce

Keep in mind the handlebar sizes are different.. The S2 is 1 inch and the S3 is 7/8 of an inch.... Sooo you will have some issues there...

The stock MC diameter on the S2 is 5/8". I fitted a Nissin caliper on my S2 along with the a newer style SS rotor, and with EBC HH pads it's an ok set-up. Not outstanding, but a slight improvement over the EBC Green pads in the old PM caliper on cast iron rotors.

To get the best you can out of the single front caliper, you'd need to go to a 1/2" master cylinder. Unfortunately, as Todd points out, you can't get a 1/2" master for the 1" bars.

So your further options for improvement would be 7/8" bars (or maybe weld 7/8" sections into the stock bars - thanks Fireman) with one of the newer style master cylinders ... or a dual disk set-up : )

Thanks Henrik,

S2 m/c = 5/8"
S3 m/c = 1/2"

That's the information I was looking for.

S2pengy: thanks for the input, but had no intention of changing the master cylinder.

The PM on the S2 works well enough for my purposes, simply looking to consolidate some of the parts to best effect before selling the '98 S3. The S2's a keeper. I have zero desire to alter it's control levers. Finally, levers that fit the contours of the human hand!

So as it stands, I'll shortly have a '98 S3 available with a '97 Lightning spec top end, PM caliper and grey Marchesini wheels.

Anyone have S2T pieces they'd like to trade for my S3T bits? Lowers, bags, mounts etc....

best,
Lornce

Wheel swap question:
Will M2 wheels/brake rotors/rear pulley bolt right up to an S2? My 2000 M2 is currently down due to broken tabs on the WileyCo. My S2 is in need of tires. Can I just pull the wheel assemblies off the M2 and slip them onto the S2 without changing out the brake rotors or rear pulley, and will the front speedo drive from the S2 fit the M2 wheel? I don't care about the color mismatch.

Thanks for any info.

I did some wheel trading a while back. A guy with a white lighting didn't want his white wheels, and I had the PM's. I liked the white wheels with the white frame better and he liked my pms....we traded wheels for some cash and new tires for me......modesto did the work, but....there was a little bit of work to be done, but we had it done in the same day...cannot remember the details, but it worked......rex

Speaking of S2 hand controls, does anybody have a spare brake lever they could part with?

I had a little tip-over in the entropy lab (south annex) that broke the ball off mine.

Mike J,

If you're still running the original "sandwich" rotor on the S2's front wheel, it won't fit the M2's front caliper: the carrier interferes with the caliper. However, the M2's wheel and rotor WILL fit the S2's PM caliper.

Apart from that, the wheels are entirely interchangeable. I can indiscriminately swap the wheels between the '95 S2 (PM's) '96 S1 (Marchesini's) and '98 S3 (PM's), if I allow for the "sandwich" rotor which only fits the PM calipers of the S1 and S2.

Hope that makes sense....

best,
Lornce
p.s. looked at the master cylinders in the garage yesterday and low and behold.... their sizes are cast right on the front.... doh!

Which begs the question.... Using the 1/2" m/c of the Nissin calipered '98 in combination with the PM caliper.... Might yield the impressive braking force of the Nissin caliper.... Asssuuuming the caliper piston dimensions are equal in both units.... A detail point perhaps, but it *could* be the greater braking force of the '98's is a factor of the m/c and NOT.... as was commonly noted in the press.... the Nissin caliper....

Thanks Rex,
I'll check the details as/if I do this.

Lornce,
Makes sense. This will be a one-way swap M2=>S2 with the M2 remaining wheel-less until it gets re-exhausted. Not sure what you mean by sandwich rotor though, are you talking about the older layered/epoxied rotor disc assemblies, or the semi floating/rattling cast iron rotor disc as being a sandwich?

In any case this will give me a chance to check the wheelbearings and do a few other maintenance items I've been meaning to get to one day.

Thanks.

Road Thing,

I'm curious what you folks need to pay at a US H-D dealer for levers? I just ordered a clutch lever for my S2 (a friend dropped it circulating my street) from a Cdn. H-D dealer and was met with a bill for $72.16.

$72.16 for a clutch lever!?!

Lornce, I think one of the advantages to the Nissin over the PM is less caliper flex. The PM caliper is kinda longish and not so well braced.

I'm not sure how the piston size compares between the two, but that shouldn't have much (if any) influence on the braking power. It'll mostly affect lever travel at the master - bigger/more pistons requiring more fluid to be moved.

S2's use the Harley levers. Haven't priced one lately.
Just called one of the local shops: 1995 S2 clutch lever is $38.00 USD, amazingly in stock at Milwaukee H-D/Buell.
That would be 51.30 Canadian according to cnnfn.com's currency converter.

Road Thing,
Don't blame you looking here first, didn't mean to appear to discourage it, not my intention at all. Bartimus mentioned an American source for $15/pair mail order after-market chrome levers to replace the stock aluminum pieces. Not available in Canada of course....

Reep, M2 levers, like all post -96 Buells (except the '96 S2) are a totally different animal. S2 levers are big chunky fit the real human hand H-D items. : )

Henrik,
While caliper flex may be a minor variable, it's *not likely* to be a major player with current caliper designs. Used to actually SEE the ATE calipers flex on my old BMW's! Master cylinder/caliper piston ratios, however, play a MAJOR role in braking power and feel.

The force applied at the master cylinder is multiplied at the wheel cylinder by a factor of the ratio of their combined area. ie: smaller master cylinder and larger wheel cylinders = more braking force.

Yes, there is more resultant lever travel, but assuming all's well in the system (no air, leaks or swelling lines) this is negligible and (if the homework's been done) should result in a more linear or progressive feel at the lever through a slightly larger arc of motion.

Hope this makes sense.

best,
Lornce
