I just received my new stock headers in the mail for a 98 Thunderbolt. Now I'm looking for a cost effective bolt on muffler. I can't find anything via google, any help locating this, and other parts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. |

If it's the correct stock header, it will have a 2" collector pointed across the bike, in front of the engine, ending near the oil filter. Any 96-98 S1, M2, or S3 muffler will work - and that includes any aftermarket mufflers for the above applications. If it's NOT correct, it could be: 2.5" collector, pointed across the bike in front of the engine - that's for a later Thunderstorm motor, and limits you a bit - 99 S3, 98 S1W. 2.5" collector, pointed to the rear of the bike, UNDER the engine - a Buell Race header, you'll need a Buell Race muffler, or I think Vance & Hines made an SS2R without an elbow for this header. 2" collector, pointed to the rear of the bike - OEM S2 header, '95-96 only. I have a supertrapp that will fit that one. |

You can also go cheap with a car glass pack muffler, for $20-25. I had one installed at a muffler shop for $40. |

ratbuell, i thought the 98 thunderbolt was a thunderstormed engine, so shouldnt it be a 2.5 collector coming down in front of the engine? |

The only 98 model that had the Thunderstorm engine was the S1W. |

Many thanks all, I purchased the stock headers from St Paul Harley in MN. I'll measure the collector and get a pic posted as soon as I can. They were represented as stock headers with the correct part #, so I expect they'll be proper fitting. I'll start looking around for S1/M2 aftermarket mufflers. |

One more thing, I've seen some very nice heat shield set ups, where do you get these? Thanks again. |

The only 98 model that had the Thunderstorm engine was the S1. My 98 S3 says differently!! |

It had Thunderstorm heads from the factory? I was pretty sure those were 99 items, with the exception of the 98 S1W. |

Well, I stand corrected then. Wonder why the S3 got the new heads and the regular lightnings didn't? |

98 S3 is thunderstormed for sure!!! S3 got them but S1 didn't, i imagine to help differentiate it from the S1W, while giving the "sport-touring" model a bit of a boost. |

This 98 S3 doesn't look to have Thunderstorm heads...Unless they've been stripped? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Buell-Thunderbolt-C ustom-S3-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQitemZ260652342311QQptZ USQ5fmotorcycles |

Wilson, doesn't that engine look a bit shiny not to have been stripped? Kinda too clean, no? I'd bet the black was stripped, if it's a '98. |
