I had an issue with the R on my commute this morning, and it's one that I haven't had yet. When I was on the freeway cruising in 6th, there were several instances where I eased into the throttle and nothing happened. When I gave it enough throttle, the bike finally jerked and took off.

There wasn't any bogging or anything to lead me to believe that it was something other than a throttle issue. It just felt like the first 10 degrees of throttle didn't do squat.

I attempted to recreate when I was going slower in town, and sure enough, it still happened in lower gears/speeds. I didn't have the time or tools to check things out when I got to work, but I can always take a glance tonight when I get out of work.

Any suggestions on what to look for? Has anyone experienced something similar?

Thanks, guys!

I´ve got same kind of issues when I get my R. I adjust the throttle cables, greased all the throttle body links and denoid. After that the throttle was much lighter to twist and there was no more "dead spots".

Do a TPS reset first.
Then sounds like a cable issue?

I don't think the TPS could be the problem if it didn't do it ALL the time, correct? I might not have stated that explicitly in my post. The problem was intermittent.

I read somewhere that there were throttle bodies where the butterflies warped in the chamber, thus making it difficult to open. I am also experiencing this when it gets hot... Let me know if there is a resolution so I can get busy doing it...

Pull your airbox off and adjust the cables, mine did exactly this, I also found 1 butterfly was not fully opening at WOT.

I had the same problem...It happened twice the first time the dealership told me the throttle body boot pulled away from the throttle body and they checked all the cables and said it was fine....then it happened again after about 100 miles and when I brought it back to the dealership they said the throttle bodies were bad and needed to be upgraded so they replaced them. My bike is and 2008 I bought it in 2010 so I still have a 2 year warranty so all this was covered...not sure what year your bike is but if its still under warranty get it to the dealership because the parts are $1000.00 and thats without labor.

How much free play is in your throttle? Every Buell I've every seen had a ton of slop from the factory.

After you get the slack out of the cables, do a tps reset. Both of these should take minutes to do, cost nothing and could save a trip to the dealer if it fixes it.

As far as I remember the throttle butterflies are not directly connected to the throttle, the butterflies open by spring pressure, this is to allow the active intake solenoid to operate (ie shut back the throttle when the ecm decides) it may be that you need to check and lubricate the pivots on the linkages or disscon the solenoid and lock the linkage part as per instructions found on this site somewhere.

I'll pull the airbox tomorrow and check everything underneath. As far as free play in the throttle, there isn't very much. It may have been removed sometime during the process of installing Traction grips a year back.

ker37, the bike's an '08 and no longer under warranty.

Also, I should note that I had no such experiences today while riding into work. Hopefully it was just a one day thing, although that woudln't make it easy to figure out what the initial problem was.

Thanks for all the ideas, guys!

What Colintornado said..

If you haven't "de-noided", then please do.

http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/290 431/490767.html

Tie the throttle plates together so the butterflies are locked together.
Adjust and lubricate the cables, otherwise the throttle can feel like a light switch.

also check that breather hose on the right side of the air box, if that sags down it can make the throttle not move freely

As Colin and Zac said, de-noiding will probably sort it. I had this exact problem with mine when it was new.

+1 Billion on de-noiding. get that thing out of there. you will kick yourself for not doing it after you feel how much more crisp the throttle response is.

+1 on denoiding. My 1125 did the same thing when it was new. It was fine when cold but after a few miles of riding, the throttle became unpredictable through the first bit of travel--nothing, nothing, nothing, then POWER! I also noticed that my TPS would only go to about 95% when I was having the throttle weirdness, but would go to 100% when the bike was cold and behaving properly. I completely removed the noid and replaced it with the Buell resistor. The problem disappeared immediately after removing the noid. I surmise that the noid or its cable was getting misshapen by the heat and causing the weird throttle behavior.

If you don't want to wait for the Buell resistor, don't. I pulled my noid and just ignored the CEL for a couple of weeks. It didn't affect rideability at all without the resistor in place.
