I have an '09 Uly XT and last fall the windshield became loose on one side. It was then that I discovered there was a recall on the fasteners. They were ordered....but...this spring when I checked at the dealership the fasteners had not come in. The service guy reordered the part and checked the shield. He said it would be ok...NOT!!! I lost the windshield and almost my head between KC and Columbia on 50 HWY. On my way home I stopped by the dealership to let them know we had another problem. Lets see how long it take to get the Windshield in...  | ||

Yikes! Thanks for the heads up and glad your head is ok. Please keep us updated on the status of getting the windshield fixed. Is anyone aware of any other non-dealer fixes for this problem? This is my daily 70 mph commuter bike and I kinda like my head! P.S. @ ranger: Nice bike! Love the color! B. | ||

I put 35,000 miles on my '06X, and have 30,000 miles on my '08 XT without any windshield problems. I'm not going to worry about it. | ||

What is the recall on the bolts? I have the Madstat windshield system on my 07 (which has the aluminum fly screen), I think 2 of my 6 bolt holes are stripped out. The only fix would be to drill the holes bigger and retap, or drill them out and put nut-inserts in the holes. | ||

What kills the well nuts is over torquing them. I found that if you tightened them just enough to get them through the holes in the flyscreen, then tightened them 8 turns more, they would hold securely but not tear the well nut out of the rubber base. The ultimate cure is to get a Palmer Bracket (my choice) or a Madstad. No worries about coming off plus a much more useful wind control system. IMO the recall "cure" sucks, you cannot clean between the windshield and the flyscreen without removing the flyscreen and disassembling the unit. No Thanks! | ||

See...people keep speaking of this "clean" procedure around Uly's...what is this?  I did drill and tap all six of my flyscreen mount screws with helicoils. I run a CeeBailey windshield in the winter, and a stock shorty in the summer, so those six are the ones that I keep changing...and the helicoils are much more durable than the aluminum threads. | ||

I have the ZG wind shield and as per the problem of the lower holding pins a friend and me drilled a hole trough them and used a flat hed screw and behind the shield a washer and a nut the rubber gromets i filled with a piece of pipe to keep then in shape, only did the 2 lower ones, have been riding like this for over 20k with no issue. | ||

It's the two lower well nuts for the windshield that broke loose on Rangerpj1, not the flyscreen to front module screws. Joe, Dirt is OK but splattered bug guts have got to go. But then again I'm riding one of those cityfied XTs. I use anti-seize on mine, so far so good. | ||

 Your windshield lower mounts should be these bolts. Did someone mention bugs. I use that car wash and wax stuff and push a wash rag under there with a popsicle stick. | ||

Thanks for the input. I'll keep you posted on what the dealer does. I just wish I could have found the windshield so I could re-attach it. Tell me more about this Palmer Bracket Rwven. | ||

As far as I know personally, this was the only recall affecting our bikes. I had no idea about it until I took mine to the dealer for my 1k mile service. The Tech Manager let me know about the issue, after they had completed it. Now mine looks just like Mnriders. BTW, love the bugs - gives your bike the "lived on" look... With the winds as they are in SoCal/Mojave (mostly in excess of 45 mph...), I would imagine I'd have lost mine a while ago had my dealer not done the modification. No matter; I'm moving to the Palmer Brackets in a month or two anyway... Russ | ||

Hm. Bug guts go when I ride in the rain  Although, I have been known to put on my helmet, drop the visor, spritz it with a quick detailer and wipe the bugs off that. Does that count?  | ||

I just drilled holes in the center of the plastic plugs. Then I used the leftover washer and a 1/4" stainless screw to hold the lower end of the windshield down. Ill take a pic this weekend. | ||

Is this ever an issue with the X screen? I replaced my XT screen with an X one as that's been the best screen setup I've found for the bike so far. But I'm still reluctant to have a screen held on with nothing more than rubber grommets. I'm sure the forces must be a lot less on the X screen, but has anyone ever had one of those detach at speed? | ||

OK. Dealer installed the replacement screen last weekend. It was rainy, but at 70 mph for 1 mile...it stayed on!!! lol... I ordered my Palmer Brackets on Monday. Thanks for all the input fellow Buellers! | ||

Rangerpj1 - did you get the brace also? It's option B, bracket and brace... Frank(PO) put the bracket kit on, but no braces and the screen vibrated wildly around idle speed. I made a pair of braces yesterday and the screen is solid now, no buzzing. There's a pic in the other windscreen thread. Zack |
