On my 06 Uly, I had the Palmer Brackets and Tall touring shield and I never could quiet get the right balance. See profile picture...

I currently have an 09 XT and I was curios about the taller shield, madstad brackets and flyscreen system they offer. How much bigger is the Madstad system than stock XT windscreen. Is it still adjustable like the palmer brackets.

Any pictures of the system? Increase or decrease the buffeting and wind noise.

I thought I would upgrade my helmet from the Scorpion EXO line to the Arai Quantum 2. Boy was that a mistake... The Arai flows well, but it is very loud compared to the EXO line of helmets. Also in open air at speed say at 80+ on my CR the Arai tries to lift off my head, whereas the EXO (pick a model) stay firmly planted with no perceived effect. I mentioned this because with the adjustable windscreens you get a lot of wind noise unless you remove the windscreen altogether. So the questions remain... what says the community?

I have the madstad brackets, flyscreen and their 18" touring screen. If I recall correctly, it's a wee bit taller than the stock XT screen when installed, and a bit wider. For me, 5'8", 30" inseam, I'm able to adjust it perfectly. I'm able to ride with my faceshield up with no problems. Buffeting is reduced a ton, and the noise is acceptable.

Once I found the sweet spot, I haven't moved it since.

The stock screen is great with the brackets as well, with the madstad touring shield just slightly better for me.

Here's the write-up I did when I first installed the brackets.

Hey Slowride, I've got the Madstad with the 16" shield. When cold or rainy it goes all the way up and out. When warm and sunny it goes down and back for a clean air flow similar to a stock X shield. It is a little noisy when all the way up but is a big improvement in warmth. I've had no "rising of the helmet" problems but I wear a Nolan modular helmet. I do want to try the Memphis shades on the side, there is a lot of wind coming through there that forces my rain jacket up and soaks my A$$.

Thanks for the write up and the info. I am 5'11" with a 30" inseam and I find that when I ride any of my bikes I tend to start hunching or crouching like the Oger I am and if you listen to Tootal, he will have you believing I am at max weight on the Uly before every putting a stitch of clothing on.

LOL, anyway... I have been riding a goldwing inbetween the Uly ownership and I can tell you all kinds of things about wind protection as well as buffetting. The first thing I noticed when I got back on the Uly XT was the clean air up to about 70mph and then the buffetting started around the helmet... and it got worse once I started hunching like an Oger.

I was just thinking that the Madstad option might be better than the Palmer, but after reading Trevd's write up, I am thinking that the Quick adjust Palmer bracktes would be the way to go again with the XT sheild.

So keep the comments coming, I haven't made up my mind yet.

One thing I can say is that I am not a big fan of the Perrelli Strada's. I have found that if I don't get some heat in the tires before I start cornering that they like to slide (drift). It feels like I am on a dirt bike in gravel. Everything is movin... Ahh well, I guess I will go back to the D616 or Mich PR2.

This is a Madstad setup. I also really enjoy the forward pegs on those long trips.

So I just browsed the Madstad site and saw they offer a 20" smoked option.

Anyone run this shield yet...

The pic looks like it was taken of bdrag's bike.

Well Somdabitch! We Be on the world wide web! HAhahaaaaaa. He used my pics I sent him. I am real happy with the shield once I got it where I wanted it.

I would recomend a thin edging of foam weather stripping around the contacting surface of the Madstad Aluminum Fly screen and the Mounting bucket. I would also slot or drill out the mounting holes to 1/4 inch weather you use foam or not. It will help keep from stripping the pot metal fastening points on the bucket. (DON'T ASK) Also place a strip of the weather strip on the back side of the flyscreen where the horn bracket comes close to the inside surface. I bent my horn bracket down but I think it was vibrating at times around the 2500 rpm range. Silent now with the foam added.

With the 20" shield on it vibrates some at Idle but not too bad. Now when I put my OEM small sheild on for a spin, OH MY GAWD did it vibrate! So the vibration sign wave with the tall shield is good. HAhahaaaaa.

I run it about an inch down from the tallest position and out fwd about 2/3's of its travel in the adjustment slots. I also added some thin nylon washers between the brackets that attach to the shield and the sliding or slotted brackets attacked to the fly screen. This way I can crank down real hard on the bottom fasteners and still slide the shield up and down some without having to break out any tools. Now that I have done all the above it makes no metalic vibrations what so ever and the adjustment is easy and positive. I also like the looks of the Spyder Shield over the older style Madstad had. Works for me. Mine is clear. 100% happy with it all.

P.S. If ya do strip out the bucket threads, I just ran a 6MM tap through the hole that was buggered up and it worked fine. If that strips out you can then run a 1/4 20 tap straight through that hole. If I was in the frame of mind to, I would install some helicoils just to be safe. Screwing a curved plate onto a curved mounting surface is a bitch! HAhahaaaaaaaa.

+1 for the Madstad 18" package on my 08 XT. I still had to install the Memphis Shades to cut the noise down to a barely noticeable level.

I got the madstad and would like to get some anti-vibe braces like the Palmers, might have to just make some. I did this mod for the flyscreen bolts with the studs Jsg4dfan sent me:

I used polished brass acorn nuts on mine though but one could do chrome!

I just installed a Madstad 18`` touring shield and made my own lowers. My helmet roared with the stock shield but its very quiet know. I`m 5` 7`` and its fine near the lowest position slightly forward. Test rode it with wifey but it was a short ride and tried many positions but she did not feel any difference. I feel I have as much wind protection as my old bmw r100rs from the knees up but way less helmet noise know plus a comfy riding position. l8r bb

I have an 09XP with Palmer adjustable brackets and Memphis Shades lowers. I adjusted the stock windshield about mid position. I can ride with my face shield up or down with any air buffeting. I would vote for both of them.
