Okay, so what is engine rotation? Did a search, didn't find a thread I liked.

I'm guessing it's something you'd do after so many miles to even out engine wear?

I rotated my engine when my Uly was less than one month old!

But it wasn't to "even out engine wear"...it was to take my header off to have it ceramic coated!

you have to rotate the engine to work on the top end. Need to remove the engine completely to work on the bottom end. You can work on the primary with the bike in one piece though : )

Whisperstealth it's not to difficult to rotate the engine get a service manual and in a few hours you can do it.then you can put heat barrier on the inside of the frame, lot easier to put the rear plug in,maybe put a comfort kit on her,and if your gonna need electrical addons rout some 10ga.up to a centech 2,and the list goes on.
It's fairly cold here in the UP of michigan this morning-16f but a nice moon set over the white fields, and the ully's in the house nice and warm think I'm gona clean up some ground wires and finish up my comfort kit install.

That was a great question, Whisperstealth. I'm glad you asked it; some wouldn't. Kudos to ya'! 'Rotating' the engine is not a term I had heard in all my years of motorcycling and I'd venture to say a great many motorcyclists would ask, 'what do you mean by rotating the engine' if they heard the term. Asking questions is cool, Man, and often time it is the 'smartest' cookies asking them while others don't want to show they don't know something. No one knows it all, though some like to pretend (lol), and everyone has questions. You sure came to the right forum because there is a lot of knowledge and experience here and better than that, folks are more than willing to help. Very cool! Ths. Mike

Gamdh,

What that picture doesn't show (and I was hoping to see) was what's under your engine supporting it in that position?

I think my rear cylinder has a small leak somewhere (little tell-tale signs of burnt oil on the upper fins on the back side of the rear cylinder and the insulation on the wiring harness that runs behind it has an oily residue about it...?) and so I'm anticipating having to do the same eventually.

Thanks Buellerxt and the rest of you guy'sfor the great support! I have a much better understanding now! I guess I'd rather ask a question before I mess something up, than after ward. - NOT that it always works out that way.

I love my Uly, and loved my X1 I had all of two months. Until then my hands on experience was limited to my '99 KLR650 I got in Oct 08. I'm still real, real new to it all. I live in Sharp county Arkansas if anybody needs a wrench hander / gofer and is willing to do a little teaching

As the acknowledged "king" of engine rotation (anyone care to dispute that?), I'll throw in a pic...

Ah, the memories...

Much thanks for that one + the gallery.

That was exactly what I was curious about. Since it appears that the engine is still captive in the frame, stability isn't an issue (as long as the bike is stable), it just needs something to keep it from rotating too far forward, thus the jack.

Thanks again!

Greg you look like a King to me, lol. We do a lot of them as we install our own 02 bunged (Dyno) header pipes before we head into the "Box" and tune a customers bike. Out best is about 25 min down and then back up, but we don't reinstall the chin scoop or front pully cover until we are finished. Great pictures. terry@jtsperformance.com

Jerry, a while back I could probably match that (almost), but thankfully I've gotten out of practice.

A few years back, Damnut blew the spark plug out of the front cylinder. Hammer ended up donating the head out of his wrecked bike. I watched Saintly, half the NEBO Crew and some of the locals tear into it like a Nascar pit crew, the engine was down and the whole donor head was removed in under 15 minutes. I couldn't even take notes.

25 min down and then back up...

Heck, it takes me twice that long just to get the snorkel back on. I've rotated the engine twice and each time I struggled trying to get that sucker seated properly. I've tried squeezing the clamp with all types of pliers and vice grips, but still take me forever. Is there something I'm missing?
