I'll start off by saying sorry, I'm sure that has been covered. But I wasn't able to find any help from searching.

I'm trying to install a set of HID headlights that I bought from DMM and I'm not sure how to hook them up to the factory harness or my 9r. I'm using the supplemental wiring harness because I've heard that the factory harness can't handle it. Any help is very appreciated.

Froggy,
based on this thread, http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/327 77/499441.html?1254710058 , I think you have the same kit...can you walk me though how you did it.

I have never taken apart a R so I can't get to specific with details, but the units are plug and play. Run the relay harness from the battery, along the frame, under the steering neck, into the fairing area. Remove the standard bulbs from the headlamp assembly. You probably will have to cut a small hole in the rubber grommets to let the HID wiring through. Everything connects only one way, so you can't screw it up. Install one light at a time.

Read this, basically the same thing
http://www.sporttwin.com/index.php?/topic/19311-in stalling-hids-on-an-1125r/

FYI, DDM's relays are for pairs of bulbs, not two individuals, as it was intended for cars. If you connect both lights to the same relay, both will be on at the same time.

Thanks Froggy...but the issue I'm having is that I don't know which wires of the factory harness to connect to the new harness/ballasts.

This is what my factory harness looks like.

Any thoughts.

It connects to the bulb part, not that.

Anyway, install it at first without the special harness, so its less wires and less confusing. Once you figure it out, swap it over to the harness.

What is the point of the accessory harness? I was under the impression the standard DDM harness used the stock wiring only to switch a relay that then drew power for the HIDs directly from the battery.

Patagonia:

I installed the DDM 35W 6000K H3 kit on my '03 XB9R 'Bolt, but did not use the factory harness to supply the power to the ballast as this is a big no-no.

I'm sure many have done it and it works just fine (most of the time it will), but for the one case in a thousand that the wiring is taxed too much and catches fire from overheating the insulation, I chose not to. Instead, I used relays to supply power to the each ballast (high and low beam), and used the stock wiring going to the stock bulb to switch the relays on and off. Works absolutely perfectly, and it's a very easy installation if you just have some time to sit down and do it.

IF you would like a nice write-up with step-by-step instructions (including the pictures I took of the install) I would be happy to do it ... this could be applicable to all other HID kits as well, as, essentially, they are all the same fundamentally.

I'm a technical writer by trade so it wouldn't be any problem for me ... just reply in this thread if that's something that would help you out and I'll post a link here when I'm done.

Ahh, I thought the ddm kit came with all of the wiring setup already.

I still want to find a good pair of real BiXenon lights to put in my 9R. Can't afford to put in 2 of the Hella sets.

Jeepin,

Thanks for the offer...but I got it all figured out late last night.

I'm sure other people would benefit from that write up though. It took me a while to get it all sorted out, and I'm sure it would have save me a lot of time and headache.

You got it man. Glad you figured it all out. How do you like it? Nice having all that light ain't it? Plus it looks nice and it's nice knowing that everybody can see you (I ride from dawn 'til dusk with high beam on).

I will do a nice write-up and post a reply here with the link for others.

Jeepinbueller - I would appreciate seeing your write up. This could be a nice winter mod to add to my list.

Thanks!

I'm working on it now--should be done in a few days. Look for a new thread in the Knowledge Vault under the Electrical section. I'll also post a link in this thread to direct traffic that way.

The low beam is run thru the delay off the battery, I switched to an led tail light, so i used the tail light on wire, to switch the delay, since it isnt powering that big bulb any more, I ran the high beam thru the stock harness,so both lights are on with high beams, it saves the ballasts a bit to delay them coming on for 20 secs till the bike starts, its been a month, and no problems, the light is ..... WOW!

I'm sorry guys I wrote an intro to my "2 cents" on the ddm lights, and I screwed up, and dont know where I posted it, lol. I used the ddm 6000k 35w kit, it lights up things really well, its 65 dollars on thier site, with a warranty, they shipped right away, and I'm happy as I can be with the product, its brighter than my friends Harley with his 5 light bar headlights all on.

I saw a Chinese HID package that said it had a programmable delay in the ballasts which seems like a good idea to me. It was on ebay so no idea if that is real or just an ebay special feature.

I have a few projectors and kits in my watch list for true Bi-xenon operation.

I'm about half way done ... it's hard to write all day long work and then go home and do it more, haha. At least I enjoy writing this.

And to answer a few question I see that I missed:

Avc8130: The DDM kits do not come with the power harness (some of their kits may, but not the Raptor unless you order separately). Even if it did, their kits are made for cages so it'd be way too long ... it's just cheaper to make a small setup yourself to save the money ... and it'll be better than the generic harness they sell ... yours will be custom fit to length.

Greg_e: I hear ya on the bi-xenons. It would be cool to retro some OEM cage bi-xenons, but I'm not sure if their motor assembly would fit behind the projector. It could probably be done, but for the small amount of dusk/night riding I do, the stock projectors actually provide a superb light pattern.

The reason I decided NOT to do a delayed relay is because my headlights don't turn off on start up ... both my headlights are on for high beam as well. I think this may have been a mod the PO did ... or maybe the early bikes just came like this? Who knows. I just let the bulbs warm up for about 20 seconds then start the bike. No dimming, no problem.

And for those with R's that are on the fence about going HID ... with the stock projectors there's really no reason NOT to upgrade other than the $60 or so to do it or being afraid of installation. Hopefully I'll alleviate that.

Hey guys:

I finished the write-up. It's located here: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/384 2/517861.html?1259457489 in the Knowledge Vault under the Electrical section.
