My question is, if one were not the least bit interested in cornering ability or wet weather performance, which tire gives the highest mileage? The reason I ask is that for the foreseeable future most of my riding will be on the 101 between Ventura and Santa Barbara. Basically 80 freeway miles a day round trip. | ||

I gotta get a life...sorry, just commenting on my insta-reply timing lol Got a set of Michelin Pilot Road2s on my S2, and loveloveLOVE em. Nearly 5k on the rear, and it still looks brand new. Bonus is, dual compound - still awesome handling, and the tread pattern is awesome in the rain too. | ||

should be fine. IIRC they share basic profiles and construction...just the PR2 is the dual compound, and I think even the tread pattern is similar between the 2. | ||

Having matched tyres is no longer compulsory. I have an Avon on Front and a Metzler on the rear - with different compounds. Work fine. The Metzler was reasonably cheap and has lasted really well too. | ||

Dave what metzeler are you running,I had M1's and chewed them up and spat them out under 2500k's,I changed to a Shinko on the rear before changing rims and tires the other day. Why not go with something like the Shinko 009? They are cheap enough, so what if they don't last the longest. | ||

I just had Roadsmarts put on and I am very impressed with the performance, although they ride a little harsh compared to the Syncs. The grip is outstanding and if the high mileage claims are accurate I think I'll probably get 10K or that's what I'm hoping. Cycle Gear has them on sale right now, there's a store in Oxnard and they should honor the Internet price, my local store did. I have a set of the RS on my old Suzuki, and while I love them in the twisties, they have a bit of a triangular profile, that seems to want to fall into corners, but they don't feel incredibly stable in a straight line. They want to drift a little. I'm still thinking about picking up yet another set of the RSs as spares for the Uly, if fo no other reason than the smoking deal for CycleGear. (That will make three sets of spares hanging out in the basement.) | ||

if you REALLY don't care about performance, then how about a cruiser tire? Someone on this board was talking about putting on Metzler M880 Marathons a year ago or so. I have those on my BMW (cruiser), and the first set lasted 12,000 miles of horribly straight roads and was still in decent shape. Of course, I don't like the profile for a sporting bike, and no one would accuse my BMW of having a lot of power to abuse a tire! My PR2's seem to be wearing well at 3K miles, but I am fortunate to be on a lot of curvy roads most of the time. I am optimistic I can get 8-10K miles out of the rear. They feel great, but I have noticed an odd raised edge effect on the sides of the rear tire recently. It is on the leading edge of the tread blocks, so you would think that would wear DOWN, not UP, due to acceleration forces. Maybe I need to twist harder! | ||

i put pilot road tires on, because they are cheep.. rear 160 bucks installed on the rim OTD in lake city.. i didnt want to spend the bucks for the new fancy schmancy pilot road 2s.... im getting over 11k miles from the rear tire.. thats more that i got from the Z-6 metzerlers.. The only drawback (depending on the time and day) is the drop back down to Ventura from Ojai via the 33, can get trafficky. Don't get me wrong, sunsets along the Rincon can be astounding, and storm surges can be impressive too. But after riding that route for 40 years it kinda bores me and I'd rather go inland and take the back way home. There is so much great riding in that area, where I'm living now pales in comparison.  | ||

Thanks. Just moved here about 2 months ago and haven't had a lot of time to explore. I did take 150 once and it is incredible but way too far out of the way for commuting. How about that foothill road that parallels the 101 from about Carpinteria north to Goleta? | ||

192 meanders around through mostly residential areas but is a nice scenic ride. Look out for cars pulling out, dogs, bicyclists, etc. One of my favorites up there is Gibraltar/E. Camino Cielo (branches off of 192 and meets up with 154), it's mislabeled on that map as W. Camino Cielo though which is on the other side of 154 and dead-ends. Perfect Uly road with nice turns though a little dirty sometimes, runs across the top of the ridge and you can see for 100 miles. Head up 154 toward Solvang and stop at Cold Springs Tavern off Stagecoach Road, nice place for lunch but very popular on the w/e. Awesome riding country if you get the time. | ||

Back to tires if you don't mind. I just ordered the new ContiMotion for the rear of my 06. I currently have a set of RSs that are both toast at 6k, although the front is not as bad. The Contis are quite cheap and since I have a local shop who sells tires at half the catalogue price, it comes out to $85. Anyone tried these yet? I don't think I've seen anyone mention them. Even with the discount, they are about $40 per tire cheaper than the RSs. |
