I'm going to be taking my 06 Uly in to Danbury for the 10k service next week. I have about 8500 miles on it, but in a month we are taking a 3k+ mile road trip. I'd like to have new plug wires since riding in the rain causes quite a few hiccups. Should I hold off on the fork service to save some $$$$? Any other suggestions like having them do a precautionary wheel bearing replacement, while they have the wheels off to put new tires on? | ||

I hafta say that the fork service/upgrade was my favorite part of the 10K service. For me it was worth the money. Less brake dive is a very good thing. As great as I thot the handling was before, it's *much* better now. | ||

Hmmm, maybe I'll have them upgrade to the newer springs. Are the newer ones straight rate springs or progressive? Either way with new tires and fork service I'm probably looking at $1000 ouch! | ||

Progressives. Night and day difference. It is not a cheap service. Mine was ~$1K with heated grips/install but no tires. I will need a front in 1K or so, but decided to squeeze a few more miles out. | ||

Personal opinion: It all depends on how you ride. At 8,500 miles, I'd probably wait. I'm sure you've read other posts on here about people skipping their fork service and nothing bad happened except maybe the handling deteriorated somewhat. I had it done on mine earlier this year because I want the handling to remain tip top. I found a local shop that did the whole 10k service for less than $500, although they quoted me less (get it in writing!!!!). I'll probably just do the 20k service myself. Perhaps it's my dirt bike background, but the fork dive on the '06 doesn't bother me. I originally started out with an extra 1/2 turn of compression damping to lessen the dive effect, but I changed it back to the stock settings after getting the 10k service done and I'm happy. The only way it would bother me would be if I let up real quickly after hard braking. Now, when I'm wringing it out, I let off the front brake more gradually, trail the rear brake while rolling on the throttle into the start of the turn, then get off the brakes and lean that thing over. The rear brake/throttle combination helps keep the forks compressed as you lean into the turn that way. Done right, it makes you feel like a pro. Smoothness is the key. Maybe it would be worth it to switch to the newer progressive fork springs, but personally, I'm in no hurry. Edit: True to form, I'm editing my original post again. Since you're going to have the stock plug wires replaced, I'd recommend getting magnecor plug wires. (www.magnecor.com) There were quite a few good writes on BWB about a year and a half ago. Mine now have about 30m miles on them. I think I had to turn the idle down after I installed them. It was a nice addition to smoothing out the motor. I had the fork service only done, and the dealer charged me $168.00. Two hrs labor and new seals. | ||

Bienhoabob - The Magnecore specs on their PDF only cover to 2006. Are 08's different ? Also which size did you get 7mm? 8mm?. Have you noticed a significant performance difference? Inquiring minds... Thanks, j | ||

The dive on the '06 forks doesn't bother me too much either. I rode a DR650 for years as my primary bike. I've been doing the trail braking thing, but not consciously. I guess it evolved into my riding style. | ||

If you don't plan to switch the springs, I would save your money on the fork service, if you are looking for a place to cut. I did the swap myself, and like it, but some rear brake made the dive OK for me in the meantime (but I am another dirt bike guy). Surprised how much dealers are nailing folks for this service. SM and a few tools is a great investment, if you have any mechanical ability at all. | ||

J, I found the box in which the Magnecor plug wires came in. #2557, 8.5mm, KV85 Competition Ignition Cables is the official description. Box also says Buell XB series, 2003-2005. They fit my '06 Uly. My guess is that all XB series motors take the same plug wires. I can't say that I could feel any performance increase, but I did notice that the wires smoothed out the motor somewhat below 3,000 rpms. Bob | ||

I just got my bike back from the 10k service. I also had them install new wheel bearings and a new belt. The bearings looked good as did the old belt that will now reside in my sidecase. I paid $540 total. NUTS | ||

Got my Uly back today and it's running great. The 10k service was a bit expensive, with 2 new tires, and a new brake rotor and pads all around, but I'm not here to bitch about the cost of bananas. They also replaced a spark plug wire, which I suspect was the reason behind all the rough running, especially in the rain. I did not have the fork service done. The Syncs feel really nice, and the bike is purring along. I am ready for our road trip to NC in a few weeks. Kudos to Danbury HD/Buell for treating me and my bike well. I am lucky to have a local dealer who gets it. They've got a nice selection of new bikes and a great parts and accessories wall. I'm sure Jeff (aka niceharleystuff on BW) had a lot to do with it. |
