My 2008 got mid 30's when it was new but after the ECU reflash, it gets low 40's now.
Still not as good as my 2000 X1 but it's big and tall so perhaps wind resistance is a factor.
I think low 40's is good enough since the reflash also got rid of a terrible off-idle stumble too. |

Low 40s in combined riding on my '08 XT with the 'y' mapping. Best I've ever gotten was (oddly enough) fully loaded, only 350mi on the engine, coming out to Homecoming last year at about 48MPG for the trip.
Considering my '03 XB9R routinely gets 50-55 when ridden the same way, I'm not too happy about it. Still beats the hell out of my car, though.
...now if Mother Nature would stop going through menopause up here I'd actually be able to ride the damned thing. |

right at 50mpg. best 62 (I was REALLY trying to be gentle). I have noticed poorer mileage since the ethanol has been added to the local gas.

It would be interesting to know how much a person weighs and how tall they are when they claim 50+ mpg. What kind of windscreen they have, gas type, elevation, ambient temp, and any other factor one can think of. |

True enough.
I'm 5'10" and weigh 145lbs sans gear. Until recently (this winter, after it got bad enough to largely prohibit riding) I always used BP/Amoco 92 octane. I live in SE Michigan, you'd have to look up the elevation relative to sea level, and most of my riding is done between 40F and 90F (temperate climate, dontchaknow) depending on the season.
I ride with the top case on all the time, side cases only when traveling long distances. I have Strada's brackets with a stock windshield set to the mid positions for both height and angle.
...riding in this morning at about 25F was a little cold. The Uly was not happy about it, either. I'm wondering if my TPS is a little out of whack or my plugs are 'sorta' fouled.

Eh, I've tried cruising at just about every reasonable RPM range with no measurable difference, and shifting over a wide range with the same results. It just doesn't want to sip, it wants to gulp (relatively speaking). |

I get close to the 50 mpg mark in normal commuting/mixed riding which is about 50/50 highway and rural. I have nticed that I tend to get better fuel economy when riding 2 up. I can't explain that at all. I remember getting 57 mpg riding from my home to the mountains and back riding 2 up (approximately 400 lbs). I am running a race ecm, drummer pipe, k&n, stock windshield, no bags. 2006 if it matters. I'm 6'0" my wife is 5'4". I'd like to see where this goes ad see if teres any correlation to height, weight, windshield, luggage etc. |

Guys, the discussion is about 2008 bikes.
The older ones get better mileage.
Any numbers in from 2009 bikes? |

I think this link was posted before but here it is again: http://www.njdot.us/buell/ulydata.php You can see all year models average mileage. My 08XT is getting around 42 average. Some are getting a bit more but newer models aren't getting as many mpg. |

All I know is MPG is my biggest disappointment with this bike. I was expecting 40-50mpg, especially since some said they were getting close to 60mpg on the older bikes. I have only broke 40 once. My bike gets 34-39 the one time I broke 40 I got 40.6. I have an excell spread sheet in my PDA and always track mileage just for fun. My car gets 45-50mpg so I started commuting in that more this winter. |

I have about 700 miles on my 2009 ULY and I have been getting from 45 to 48 MPG on each tank. I usually put in CONOCO 93 premium or 89 ethanol when no premium around. I have a large windshield mounted to hide from the Nebraska 30 degree weather and the evelation around here is between 1,400 & 1,600 ASL. I does not seem to make any difference if I run with the bags on or not and I am 5'10" tall & weigh 250#. I am a little disappointed in the milage and the fuell capacity of the bike as I would really like to be able to get 225 to 250 miles on a tank. My 98 S1WL gets between 48 and 54 MPG and it gas a larger tank capacity for the 250 mile per tank range. |

Got 50mpg (imperial gallon) last summer with me and the wife with the bike fully loaded. Thought that was pretty good really. I have the race ecm installed now so we'll see if that makes a difference. |

My 09 has about 4500 miles on her now. Best I've ever gotten is 42mpg. I tend to get mid 30's in the city, 40-42 out cruising. The only reason I find that disappointing is because they are 'rated' to get 50's and 60's. |

Ok filled up the 09 this afternoon, got 47.2mpg. This engine has only about 600 miles on it, and is running on a winter blend containing 10% ethanol. This is only a few MPG worse than what my 06 is getting right now in the winter, so I believe it will be even closer once this thing breaks in. For driving habits, first half of the tank was mostly highway cruising on Garden State parkway, the second half was mostly semi aggressive riding around New York and Connecticut back roads, and a little bit of 90mph cruising on I-84.
Testing continues, but so far this myth is looking busted. |

Looks like the '09 numbers are better than the '08's.
For what it's worth, my '07 seems to match the 08 numbers: averaging 35-39 mpg running side bags 100% of the time. |

I just got home from a 350 mile ride on my '08 XT. the first tank full gave me exactly 40 MPG. I wasn't too surprised, as I was riding on the Interstate between 80 - 85 MPH the whole tank. The second tank however, gave me 49 MPG. I was running twisty secondary roads, and kept the RPMs up. I expected my mileage to be a lot lower than that.
Sometimes I feel like I'm missing something, but I don't know what. |

My mileage has been consistent at 40 MPG no matter what until today. Four tanks of over 45 MPG, one of the four at 49, full bags, and mostly 74-80 MPH. I think it is the little dry bag I put on my passenger seat as a backrest  (Yes I rode 600 plus miles today.) |
