That's what the salesman told me anyway. I was in Ft. Myers today and thought I'd stop by the dealership. I mainly wanted to see if they had an XR1200 as I haven't seen one in person yet. Well, no XR1200, but they did have a decent number of Buells including an 08 red XT. One of the salesmen saw me looking it over and asked me if I wanted to take it home. I told him anything was possible. At that point he told me it was an 08 and he didn't know what price the manager wanted for it, but....pointing to the bags he said it had optional bags on it that cost $1800. I told him that this was an XT model and the bags came standard. He was pretty set that they didn't come standard but were $1800 extra. I decided it wasn't worth arguing over, so I asked him if they had an XR1200. He seemed stumped at first, but then the light came on. He told me they weren't being delivered yet, but were taking orders. Now I know that HD sells many, many, many more bikes than Buell does, but I really had high hopes when I walked in the dealership and saw maybe 10 Buells that this was a dealer that got Buells. Maybe I am being too hard on the guy, but I was really disappointed that he didn't know more about Buells, like what comes on an XT. I am not sure if I will ever buy a Buell, I seem to change my mind what I want on a weekly basis, but if I do I will be looking for a dealer that knows a bit more about them. I am sure they exist. | ||

although i had gotten 3 of the buells i have/had from brandon, they really don't have anyone there that really gets it. supposedly fletchers is a little more buell friendly but if nothing else it might pay to see paul up at gainesville buell/hd right off the interstate. paul is good people and he does get it. haven't been out riding lately but one day i'm gonna have to so maybe see ya around sometime. | ||

despite their obvious lack of buell knowledge ft myers hd/buell has been good to deal with in my experience. they treated me just like a harley owner. even when I return for warrantee or service work. (Message edited by blk_uly on January 13, 2009) | ||

They could cost 1800 if you were looking at a crash repair item..... maybe... 92030-05Y Top Case & Side Case System $1,395.95 , the 300 for the mounting and the Labor to put them back on the bike, and 100 in tax for govt.....? But um, dude they ARE stock on the XT, he outta have known that. Just because they work at the shop, doesnt mean they get Buell. Your best bet is to find out who at the shop RIDES Buell. They are probably your best bet. | ||

About the XR 1200 as i live in Europe i've seen a couple in one of the dealers, and a review in mag, they pointed out the seat was to very good, and that the rear suspension was quite basic, for such a bike, but that was just one of the first ones that before being on the market would need some upgrades. just wonder why the oil filter is so big and exposed. compared to a buell | ||

Nev, thanks for the heads up about Gainesville. I live in Tallahassee and the HD dealer here doesn't sell and wont touch Buells, (not event to change a tire). For me the three closest dealers are Gainesville (2hrs), Jacksonville (2 1/2hrs)and Dothan (2hrs), if ever need anything. There are a couple guys that work in the local HD dealer's shop that ride Buells and they said they get their stuff (and warranty work)from Gainesville and that the G'ville shop is the best in the area, so confirmation from one more source is very reassuring, thanks. | ||

Dynasport and Nevrenuf. Fletchers in Clearwater is pretty Buell friendly. On top of being a pretty interesting guy, old man Fletcher still rides a Blast. One of the sales guys rides an XB12 and Scott Zampach is very pro Buell. Parts guys seem to know Buells to. Before I totaled my Blast One of them even knew tip over part numbers off the top of his head. Last time I was in the shop they had 8 new Buells of different flavors on the floor along with 2 used ones. I'd say overall Fletcher's is very Buell friendly. | ||

Sayitaintso, a HD dealer that is not a Buell dealer can't touch your bike. Its part of the dealer agreement. Long thread in Court's section about it. | ||

Sayitaintso - I'm in Tally too, and I bring my Uly to Gainesville for warranty work. Tifton is closer, but they're one of those dealers that has a Buell sign out front, but nothing more than that. The guys at Gainesville actually ride Buells and know their stuff. Talk to Paul if you go there. | ||

Froggy, thanks for the heads up, I'll check it out. It just seemed weird that they wouldn't even change a tire. I'm gonna do most of my own work anyway so its not that big of a deal. Only for warranty work or jobs that may need some special tool that I'm not gonna buy. I'm not even sure how many jobs there will be that need something specific I dont already have, or can borrow. While it's nearly become cliche' that "they won't even change a tire" be mindful that the width of the Buell rear wheel renders the equipment in most Harley-Davidson shops unable to change a tire. It's a bit like going to Saturn to get the wheels changed on your McLaren. Don't fall victim to the "wheel trap". | ||

Get a Torx 27 socket, and a set of Allen keys, that will take care of 90% of the bike. There isn't a single job I know of that needs a HD tool. The fork oil change claims to require special HD spring compressors, but some ratchet tie downs work great. | ||

Any Buell-centric customer ought to ask such an il-prepared, uninformed sales person to get you the Buell sales person at that dealership. If still puzzled, tell them to either do that or get the sales manager since you are the customer and you can deal with anyone you want. If no one at the dealership knows what they are talking about, let them know it. Buell and Harley have reams of on-line courses on their products; technical and sales in nature. In this slow economy there is no reason they can't be more educated on the product. The XT most certainly comes with saddle bags and the Tour Pak, the older style hardbags not the newer Outdoorsman. They are locking and detachable with a seperate key. Compared to a new Uly, the XT: Has the old triple clamps and smaller diameter shorter forks giving less stop to stop radius. Its suspension is tuned more for tight cornering on roads, not off road generous. It has lighter less impact-durable rims. Has the taller windscreen Has a Firebolt style front fender Has less ground clearance and shorter seat height. ~jammer | ||

Sayitaintso: For what it is worth...I purchased my Uly in Dothan back in January 2007 while I was at Fort Rucker for a couple months. The Dothan Buell dealer was very good to work with and the service dept always treated extremely well! I would not hesitate to work with them again if I was in the area. | ||

Maximum, thats good to hear. I think I can get to Dothan a little quicker (fewer cops to worry about) than G'ville, and imo the ride there is a little nicer anyway. i WAS WAITING TO BUY A BIKE until I saw the XR1200/ Uly. I test rode the Uly first, and was hooked. I finally saw an XR1200 at the bike show, and was REALLY glad I didn't wait to buy the Uly. The XR did not seem to be a good fit. Now I have had a stack of sportsters, and loved them all, I also have an old xr and love it too. But for me the MOST fun bike is without a doubt, the 08 Uly. Now my dealership,(Greatlakes HD). was also one of the best dealerships I've found. | ||

My guess is that the salesman could tell me all kinds of details about a Softail of whatever flavor I wanted. He just doesn't know his Buells very well. He was friendly and seemed like a decent guy. Not someone I'd trust for any Buell info though. I think the Buells are fine bikes. I wish more of the dealers and salespeople thought so too. At my local YamaKawZuki dealer half the salesmen look like they just got out of high school and can only talk to you about a GSXR or an R bike. The other half are older and only talk about cruisers. So, I understand salespeople have their areas of interest they are most knowledgeable about. It is just rare in my experience to find a salesperson at a HD dealership who knows much about Buells or even does a good job pretending he likes them. It is certainly not limited to Buells at HD dealers though. My son bought a Monster at a Ducati/BMW/Triumph/MV Augusta dealership. They are a small shop with just a few (I think 3) salespeople. One is a BMW nut and one is a Ducati nut. Somehow my son ended up with the BMW guy. He was very nice and is an avid rider, but was certainly no expert on Ducatis. At least when my son asked a question he didn't know he went and looked it up right away and didn't give him a load of bull. I have brought this up before. I really need to let it go. I am working on my issues. | ||

I can vouch for Jammer, got my XT from him last year. Hands down best motor vehicle buying experience I've ever had. Service guys have been great as well. If you are in the market for a new Buell and can get to Colorado, I highly recommend High Country. |
