Summer's winding down but it's still warm and there's a full moon out tonight. Surfin' Safari Wednesdays continue for 2 more weeks at Baja Cantina in Marina Del Rey where you too could win a surfboard. Jen did.

Let's celebrate a unique SoCal summer evening with live surf music by Dead Men Don't Surf. No kidding, it's Surf & 60's songs with lots of reverb & liquid twang. Like an extremely talented all-star team, the band's composed entirely of ex Dick Dale band members. You remember Dick Dale, the King of the Surf Guitars, right? The Fun, fun, fun! starts at 7 pm and it's free. Park yer bike wherever or bribe the valet to park on the lot. We'll be there on the Firebolt.

It's true. X1 Roeland mentioned last year that one can indeed go West from Temecula on Rancho California Rd and ride along the mountain ridges and wind up on the Ortega Hwy. I don't know if this is the road he was thinking about, but this is one killer route, I mean, Killen Trail. But it's not so bad if you can fancy 10 miles of one lane scenic forest road. At least it's all paved. Fear not, Jen & I did it on the Firebolt and we didn't faint, crash or get lost. There's only 1 paved road thru the area so you can't get lost. Look for this and other infamous roads (think 26% downhill grade!), vineyards & horse ranches in an upcoming SoCal BRAG run in October.

Sparky,
I found that way last weekend!

I've been halfway down Killen trail from the Ortega side before, because the Wildomar OHV area is at the "bottom" of the hill. When we went that way before, it looked like there was a way to get over to the Deluz road way. So last weekend, Joanne and I went from the Ortega end on the way back from Idyllwild and kept going on Killen trail. It's 9 miles from Ortega to Wildomar OHV, then another 9 VERY remote single lane paved (barely!) to some WILDERNESS trail head parking area, where the ranches start and the road opens up. We had no water with us, and it was hot. I was actualy fearful that if we had a breakdown, no one would find us for a couple days back there. Then we banged around in that horse ranch/vineyard/avacodo/citrus grove area, going in circles, trying to find the out to Deluz. We were lost back there for some time. Lots of paved roads that go nowhere. We found a couple of those steep hills. I am quite certain that those are the steepest public roads I have ever been on. Frickin roller coasters!!

I'm not sure I could find my way back to Killen Trail from the Deluz side again. But it was fun being lost back there! I'm pretty sure there's a dirt stretch that cuts 12-15 miles out of that loop, picking up Killen trail about 10 miles from the Ortega end.

PRODUCERS TICKETS

Through a typically boneheaded maneuver I've bought Producers tickets for a day / time at which the recipient had previous engagements.

Anyone want to buy?

AL, De Luz Canyon is a real good run, I've been taking it from Fallbrook into Temecula for the last 3 weeks. 2 bad spots though, that you have to look out for. one has a lot of sand, and the other has gravel right in the center of the lane. Can't tell ya how to get to it from the Ortega though, never made that run from Ortega to De Luz myself that is. There's a few of us that go home that way, me being the only Bueller, so if you ever want to run it from Fallbrook into Temecula let me know, we normally hit Fallbrook at about 5pm +-15min.

Deluz is a fun road, but with all those arizona river crossings, it can be an adventure. I hit one of those sandy spots last week and had a brief loss of traction that was a bit puckering. I've also had my bike almost high side on the slime in those river crossings upon emerging on the far dry side, so be careful on the ones that are usually flowing. The ones that are usually dry aren't generally so bad.

The "shortcut" to Killen trail isn't on any maps that I can find. Mapquest doesn't track Killen trail past where it necks down to one lane prior to the OHV area. However, you can trace it by going to www.globexplorer.com and looking at the aerial shots under the image Viewer tab.

If you where going through the river crossings you where definitively going the wrong way, I got lost back in there my first time from going off directions from a young guy, and did the river crossing marathon too. Hit about 5 different dirt road also but finally got out alive, don't ask me how, but I did. The way we go doesn't have any river crossings and only the 2 bad spots that I mentioned above. Guess after looking at Map Quest, we actually are only on De Luz a small portion of the trip, we cut through on Sandla Creek Drive, It's a hell of a lot better than doing De Luz the whole way.
