The bags lay on the side plastic that keep them away from the wheel, I'd say a good 8 inches of clearance. I have not had any blow out up to 70 or so, I normally have things in them though so their not empty which may make a difference. They have inserts that make them keep their shape and rain covers. I can fit a full face helmet or laptop in them. The only problem I see is they do lay on the side of the rear plastic and will probably make some marks.
