Hey Everyone!

MY BELIEF IN SAFETY GEAR WAS REAFFIRMED TODAY!!!!!

Ben and I snuck off for little liesurly ride down 79 today, got a late lunch at the lighthouse and returned home. We were coming back, crested a hill and Ben Smacked a DEER!!!!! Deer did a flat spin. Ben came out of his seat and landed back on the bike. they both went down together. He and the bike slid for what seemed like an eternity. He kicked the bike away as they slid together. He slid off one side of the rode and the bike slid off the other. The whole time I was on the brakes hard and watching him slide away from me.
Upon coming to a stop, he tried to get up, and I was yelling at him to lay down and let us assess everything so he didn't get hurt any further. After a few minutes discussing if or what hurt, He began to remove is gear. Helmet had one little scratch on the back. The palms of his gloves were pretty well gone but not one scratch on his hands. Joe Rocket Ballistic jacket was trashed!!!!! He got road rash on the back of his right shoulder about silver dollar size and road rash on his right elbow about the size of a quarter. Joe rocket ballistic pants were also trashed on the right side. He got one small spot of road rash on his hip and one small spot on his knee. All in all he is in pretty damn good shape considering what happened. After seeing it all unfold right in front of me I still can not believe he got up and WALKED AWAY from this situation!!!!
We walked over and checked out the bike. I guarantee its totaled. Steering head looks like it just exploded!!! front end is only connected by the wiring or what is left of the wiring. One of the front spokes is completely missing and another is cracked all the way through.
Thank god he came out of this in one piece!! It took the local law enforcement over an hour to arrive at the scene!!!! During that hour wait, I took the opportunity to walk off the distance that he slid. APPROX 115 TO 120 YDS!!!!! EMT's came to the scene and checked him out.
A really nice gentleman that lived right up the rode stopped almost immediately after the accident and assisted us. His wife is an emergency room nurse and cleaned up the few spots of road rash that Ben got during the wreck. The husband got a truck and trailer, helped us load up the bike. Took it to his house so that we can go back in the morning with my trailer and pickup the bike. He even offed us a Diet Pepsi!!! These people were awesome!!!! I can't praise them enough!!!!!
I remembered to bring the digital camera and I have plenty pictures that I will share soon!! trust me, when you see what his safety equipment looks like and then see what he looks like, you will think they both went through two totally different situations!!!!
This situation has reaffirmed every belief I have in safety gear and the kindness of the people that live in this area.

Keith

P.s. Dennis, Don't worry about riding BITCH!! Ben had to ride BITCH on the back on my X1 for over 30 minutes today!!! (sorry Ben, Couldn't resist!!)

Keith...I'm very glad that Ben is okay...Give him our best from STL...I guess you're saying that the Joe Rocket stuff was holed in a few places for Ben to get road rash...Please show us the damage...The mesh stuff, although very air flowing, has concerned me re it's protective side...But the pics I've seen on the net have never shown it holed, just abraded...

So, how were the venison steaks?...Freekin' bambi's 'r worst nitemare!...Hey, let's re-introduce elk and bison...

See Ya!

Ben...

Sorry to hear about your bike, but very pleased to hear your injuries are minor... I want your luck dude!!! Car vs deer the car loses big time... you are lucky... bike vs deer and it could well have been your last ride... or the remaining rides might have been in a wheel chair. I am big into riding gear... but am guilty of skipping the leather pants or Joe Rocket pants except on longer rides. I have a small Joe Rocket shrine in my apartment that fills a small closet. I have heard of several Joe Rocket saves... each time the garment was trashed. Consider that insurance collected... toss it... or save it as a good luck souvenir. This is gonna hurt... RETIRE YOUR HELMET. You can't know how hard it hit, or what internal damage has happened... and your head is worth a new helmet. PLUS... you will want your new helmet to match your new bike! :-)

Digger...

If I can walk away from a crash at any speed (at my age... it's all fun and games until someone breaks a hip!)... I will ride bitch anytime, any distance... over an ambulance ride!!! (knock on wood) I have hit pavement twice in about 30+ years of riding... I almost hate to say it for fear of tempting fate... and both were without protective gear beyond a helmet... once was about 1970... hard tires back then did nothing for traction... second time a car ran a stop sign in front of me on the way home from buying a bike, I was too pissed to have realized I was hurt if I would have been hurt! After looking at me... and looking at my new ride... I looked at the ass who ran the stop sign and said "leave" he says what... I said "leave before I loose my temper!"Rain and hard tires of the mid 70s contributed to that fall, loooong slide to a stop, luck had it where I did not end up under the car... the road had a slope that moved me off my original path into the side of the car.

Last week, a friend of my fiancee was in a bad bike vs car, Kawasaki cruiser. Needless to say the bike is gone... but get this... the impact tore the front wheel off a big SUV. She had just taken a rider safety course... and it has not been a month... BUT... she was riding bitch on her bike when it happened. Her brother was up front... as it was put to me "he has been riding for a long time... but just got his license." too often that is a description after a crash. I have not yet seen the accident report... but she remembers him zooming through a turn floor boards scraping... and I can't figure this out from what she has explained... hit near head on... on the passenger side of the SUV. My thought was too much turn... wrong type of bike for high speed twisties... and target fixation. Protective gear was helmets, long sleeve shirt and long pants... her roomie is co-owner of the bike... and she had to be talked into wearing the long sleeve shirt she had on when they left on the ride. Results... both rider and passenger have broken legs and an abundance of road rash. Her brothers leg was a minor factor... she had a compound fracture of the femur. She will have a LONG recovery... they think her foot is also messed up. I don't think they will replace the bike.

Bob,
There were several holes in the Joe Rocket Jacket. He was wearing the Ballistic series not the Phoenix series. After seeing the accident and Ben afterwards I truley believe this equpment does its JOB!!! To give you a hint, he was carrying Racerboy and V2WIN type speeds at the time of this accident. He slid a very very very long distance!!!!! like I said before approx 115 to 120 yds on pavement the whole time. I have pics of the equipment and the bike. I will post them all later this afternoon. Sorry just got back from picking up his bike for him and have to get payroll done first! Ben stopped by just a little bit ago. Says he is a little stiff but other than that feels pretty damn good. I figured he'd have a tough time getting those achy bones and muscles to move this morning. But he says "two Alieve and I felt fine".

Dennis,
He should be very happy just to be able to walk away from this one. Looked like an explosion occurred right in front of my face. He was taking it all in stride this morning. joking a bit and checking out the bike. Says he has been rehashed everything over and over in his mind since it happened. I know he has allready seen many of your comments and thanks all of you for your support. He said he will post his version later today or tommorrow. He said he is taking the day and spending it with his kids. As he well should.

Everyone, Thank you for your concerns and well wishes. I will be fine, just as soon as I get back on 2 wheels, Like Keith said the Joe Rocket gear did it's job! I have sent them pictures and they said I will be sent a T-shirt and a care package? Very nice of them. I can't say enough good things about the many people who stopped to help and to Gary Dix and his wife Linda. If I landed in a Hospital at the end of my slide I could not have been under better care. Not only was my faith in my protective gear reaffirmed but also in the human race as well. I can't thank Keith enough for being a great Wing-man and friend through this.

Daves, I will be calling you, I still haven't got that crack in the dash fixed.lol I need to figure out when and how I will get my bike up there.

Ben

Dave...You tease, you!...As a matter of a fact John has noted that my "average" has kinda come down since the demise of Das Boat in May...And I'm trying real hard to keep it that way...Except on KK...Two weeks ago we were headed south on KK at about 140 indicated and met two sport bikes going north at about the same speed in a huge sweeper...If you've never experienced an almost 300 mph closing rate, it's quite an event...On KK, for well over ten miles, you can carry triple digit speeds and feel fairly comfy doing so as the sight lines are huge...Probably one of the fastest, safest, least patrolled roads in MO...Find Bixby Mo at the junction of 32 and 49 and go west to find KK going off to the south...Uh, and we kinda have a pretty good contact with the Iron County sheriff (as in his mother)...

See Ya!

Bob

Hey! I was just down in Bixby on KK a couple of months ago. You ever have lunch at that little convience store with the caboose? Small world. Wish I'd known these facts back then. I had a hell of a good time anyway though.
