So I was reading the Barrett Jackson thread and someone asked what modern vehicle would be worth a chunk in the future.

I figured this is an interesting question, and it deserves its own thread.

Mind you these are mostly everyday cars.
My picks

1) first generation Toyota Mr2 (1985-1989?)
2) Early Mazda Miata
3) Honda CRX
4) Buick Grand National/GNX (sort of already is)
5) Any BMW M5

I will most likely add to this list.

So what are your choices?

1987-1993 fox body Mustang with a 5.0, especially coupes or the '93 Cobra
They aren't all that rare, unless you're trying to find a clean, low mileage car and you'll see that they fetch a pretty high price already. So many of these cars have been hammered beyond repair, I don't know how many will make it to "The Future"

Oh you so do not have my favorite car in your stable. : | Damn, I hope you at least spool up that Buicks turbo once every quarter just to keep her in shape. Last time I checked those were fetching 19-34 depending on shape, who knows what auction craziness brings

i had a 89 toyota mr2 hardtop, rarest of the rare for those cars. Couldnt stand the thing anymore, sold it and bought the m2, couldnt be happier.

Personally, i dont see the mr2, miata or the crx being very valuable. Look at the 70's celicas, most are junk and there are a few nice examples, but they tend not to bring big money. Mk1 mr2's can easily be had for 1k or less. There were too many produced. Parts prices are very high for those cars and they tend to rust in certain areas.

The gnx already brings good money and will continue to do so.

M5 is also a good choice. I think the E30 m3 will only continue to appreciate since limited quantities were made. Race car for the road.

Cars like the shelby gt500 will always be collectable.

But what do i know, a lot of those cars on Barret Jackson shouldnt go for 200k+...

Those Shelbys were just used cars at one point. I remember a faded blue GT500 that was always parked at a restaurant in Green Bay. When I was in high school a buddy of mine chopped up an SS Nova and put it on a Blazer chassis. When I was done with my '77 Z28 (not a true classic, I know), it went straight to the salvage yard. Another kid in my school wrapped his SD455 Firebird around a tree. At the time, none of us thought of these cars as anything other than cool used cars. None of us thought they would be worth anything.

That's a great question....

I wonder what will be valuable.

The last Camaro?
The latest T-bird?
First generation GTI?
The latest Mustang GT?
I see that the SS Impala from the mid '90s are getting kind of expensive.

With the modern commodity market where everything is researched to death, I don't know if there really ever will be those "gems" again.

What about some of the Sporty Cadillacs? I can't remember what model, but they were hand made and about the coolest looking car I ever saw. Wide and flat...

Found it... the xlr. Don't know how much they went for new...

If we could only see the future. We would be ga-gillonaires (is that a word).

I think those 2 seater Cadillacs (I don't know what they're called) will bring strong money. Maybe the after-market Mustangs like the Saleen. The first series of 2008 Challengers, The Shelby GT500KR has a chance.

Who would have thought a 1953 Chevorlet 210 would draw $19,000! Other than the fact the guy probably had more than that in it.

If I had the spare money and the space to put a car aside I think I would do that. Like the fictious 57 Chev fuelly that is in perfect condition stored in some widows barn and she pays some guy to take it away. I am sure everyone has heard a version of that story.

Bring back the hot rodding of the 40's and 50's, the muscle of the late 50's and 60's.

Most of todays cars are pretty much the same with vinyl decals. The cars lack soul. Thank you EPA and thank you OPEC.

Oh, and I had an 86 CRX Si, which was a great little car. A fun sporty little commuter...

But to be honest, the 95 Saturn SC2 that I replaced it with (and that I am still driving today with 150k miles on it) was better in *every* regard. It is faster, handles better, has more space, is more reliable, and is cheaper in overall cost of ownership (the slightly better fuel economy on the CRX is more then offset by the fact that it eats CV joints).

Don't get me wrong, both the CRX and the SC2 are noisy little cramped econo boxes... fun little cramped and noisy little econo boxes though...

A well tuned CRX and the newer Civic hot engine were rockets. In Orange County Ca. and I am sure other areas these little buzz bombs are turbo charged and running nitros and blowing off big bore, big blocks.

A stock CRX would be a strong contender in 20 years.

NO way will any Jap crap cars made so far make it to collector status. NO WAY. ONE exception(and the only one) is the Acura NSX.

the last generation Mustang Cobra "R" model is a definate contender. And i grew up a Chevy guy.

Another,is the 1992 Corvette ZR1 DOHC V-8.
That one was a disaster profit wise, the engine was like $30,000 alone

Honda Civic?? future collectable?

If a Crosley 2 door coupe, Citreon 2CV, or a Fiat 600 can become a collectible, then why not a CRX?

I would hope to be around 20 more years to prove you wrong.

I think it is time for a cold Narry and a stuffie, you know what I mean Greg.

I bet there are more Japanese cars that will be up there eventually. A good early Z car can easily pull $10,000. Generation III Rx7s, and turbo Supras already pull good money. When the kids who lusted after them but couldn't afford them get to be 50-60 and have lots of expendable income, I bet the prices go way up. I doubt they will ever be $500,000 cars, but who knows?

Who would have thought any '71 Plymouth on the planet would pull 2.2 million?

Too many Miatas to be collectible me thinks...(I had a red '90 that I sold a few years back...have an '03 special edition now)

93-95 RX-7's and Turbo Supras are still getting premium money from the Fast and Furious crowd. I think they are destined to be classics.

I could see Japaneses performance cars moving into collector status.
As these guys that are into the import scene start getting older I could see the market for rare and mint condition import sports cars to go up.
Imagine that kid in the riced out the civic that his parents gave him and dreams of having a twin-turbo Supra. Kinda similar to the baby-boomers buying up all the rare muscle cars that they never had as kids.

My picks for import future collectibles.
Toyota Twin Turbo Supra's
Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX
Subaru WRX STI
Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4 & GTO TwinTurbo
Nissan "Z" cars (the early models are already collectible)
Mazda RX-7's

If you don't think Japanese cars will ever be high priced collectibles look at what some mint '70 import sports cars are going for now. A Toyota 2000GT will can fetch around $250,000! (only a handful were made)

Nissan 300ZX. I swear, that thing never looks old, and they never get cheap.

I'm thinking the S197 (new) Mustangs might, since they're so retro, and the name is legendary.

Dodge Prowler? They're already super-rare.

CRX's are ALREADY collectibles, they just haven't gotten that expensive yet. Their time is certainly coming.

A 1977 Datsun 280Z went for $17,000.00! Nice car, it was Corvette powered with a 6 speed tranny, and air conditioning.

The big buck cars on BJ Auction tend to be very low mileage, relatively rare vehicles that appeal to a fairly large audience (now). Most are rare due to few people buying them when new due to big sticker $$$ and/or some undesireable trait such as big block engine when gas prices are rising, no AC, no radio, etc. or just ahead of its time for some reason.

Here is my pickfor a recent vehicle, 2002 Lincoln Blackwood. A pimped out pick up with only 1 option (Navigation system). Price tag when new $52K or $54K with Nav. System. Only made for one year (3358 units), very slow sales due to the price, lack of utility due to stainless steel/LED lit/toneu covered bed and appeared slightly too soon for decked out pick up trend seen now.

They seem to be more popular now than when new. I recently purchased a one owner BW with less than 4000 miles. Hopefully it will at least hold its value.

Perhaps my 1986 Honda civic would have been collectible?

b

Purchased for $400
Power nothing
1300cc engine and a five speed as god intended
39 MPG

Rusted out at 190,000 miles. NEVER burnt a drop of oil.

It was the perfect beater.

Air-cooled Porsche 911, especially those built before 1989, and the Turbo / 930 models.
