There's a rubber ring under the aluminum ring where the gas cap goes. Mine seems to be seeping a bit, when I top off the tank. Once the level goes down just a bit of course it stops. I tightened all the bolts around it pretty good.

What's the life expectancy of the rubber seal? Anybody replaced one? Pretty straightforward, or is there any trick to it, to watch out for?

I was wondering what's on the other side, where or what does the bolt thread into? And will it fall down into the tank if I take all the bolts out?

The only thing that will fall into the tank is the cut-off float for the tank vent. The fasteners that the countersunk screws on the gas cap ring screw into are imbedded in the tank.

I'd take it off and reseal the rubber seal/splashguard with Hylomar before I replaced it. Don't leave it outside the tank for too long... it 'dessicates' to a point where it gets hard to put back in if you take it out of it's vaporous environment.

That's the only thing I could think of, at least, when I couldn't get mine back on when I had the tank repainted.

Jayvee,
I just had the same problem on my S2.
I removed the vent then the ring screws.
I cleaned up both sides of the gasket, the tank and the ring. Then applied Hylomar.
Put everything back together and no more problems.
I did mine the day before MBV and didn't leak a drop all weekend.
