I shoot tv commercials for a chain of local HD dealerships. The owner, who's very Buell-positive, told me there was a very big surprise coming for the Buell line.
He couldn't say what it was, but he said I wouldn't be disappointed. Now I know what he was talking about.

Ducxl-probably had as much to do with space. If the numbers I've seen are true, they had to spread it apart to get the bore bigger because the stroke had to be shortened to get to 10,500. They probably didn't want to go to a 56" wheelbase either, so needed the majority of the heads near the frame, which 90 degree probably wouldn't offer. Also being a dry sump 90 degrees might be tougher to pull off-I'm guessing here but this makes for a fun debate: )

This "if the engine ain't air-cooled or built in the US, it ain't a real Buell" mindset reminds me of another time, when HD first released the V-Rods. There are a lot of HD riders who still think the V-Rod isn't a true Harley.
Everyone's welcome to their own opinion, of course, and the best way you can show your acceptance/rejection of the new concept is to vote with your wallet.

I hope we don't split into two different camps over the new bike. I'm guessing the majority of Buellers will love the 1125R.
Where do I sign up for a test ride?

Chadhargis:
"If the rumors are true, we have our new engine..."

If the video's fake, then somebody a) is very good at faking videos and b) has waaay too much time & money. See it for yourself tomorrow. Also, I'm sure I saw two cam plugs on the rear cylinder head...

"and while it won't compete in stock form with the Jap superbikes,"

Don't assume anything. The wheelies on the straights are impressive...

They were? I don't see how. Even 49cc scooters and 800 pound cruisers can be wheelied...

I hope this is a Buell built engine and not a Rotax. If it's Rotax, and not built in America, could you still call this Buell an American bike?

What is the matter with you?
Buell at last get rid of the one thing holding them back as a serious sports bike manufacturer and get a modern, top of the range, powerful engine to replace the Harley lump, and you complain that it is 'un-American'.

This is the best move that Buell have made in their history, and one that I believe will see the bike get the recognition it deserves worldwide, without the snide remarks about being 'Harley powered' that crop up in just about every road test and article you currently read.
Personally I don't care if the engine is from Timbuktoo so long as it delivers the performance and reliability we all want.

We live in a global economy, and Buell have done the brave thing and gone shopping around the world for the best components they can find, in the same way that Triumph, Ducati and all the other quality manufacturers do. Do you think that MV Agusta's are all Italian or Triumphs all British?.

Remember Guys the P-51 was a good airplane. Once they put a British engine in it, it became one of the best fighter aircraft of all time...No big deal.

As I recall... 72 degrees is where most of the top F1 teams are at. Has to do with harmonics.

What do you suppose folks would say if, for instance, they found out this engine shared not a single piece with any prior engine? Was entirely Buell designed and used technology that was unavailable 3 years ago?

Suppose that would quiet any of the nay-sayers?

It would not be accurate to apply the term "Rotax engine".

Any guesses as to when the Buell website will reflect the new model?

Court, I'd rather have a Rotax than an engine entirely designed by Buell. I'm done pouring money into HD designed products just to keep all of the avante garde crap and outdated weak links running. I'd have a much higher degree of confidence in a Rotax engine.

I'm on my second Buell. I love riding it, but I'm sick of fixing weak links.

Rotax power would be welcomed by me.

I think I would be ok with a motor Erik and the Elves have DESIGNED....this is taking into consideration their ability to DESIGN a sportbike around a friggin HD lump for the past umpteen years. Yeah I think they are pretty compotent people over their in East Troy....what say you??

That would make ME very happy. That would be be the better than a HD engine or a Rotax engine or anything else. That would mean Rotax is merely doing the production and it isn't a Rotax motor. Its a BUELL motor that Rotax was merely partnered with for their production capacity.

Now that's SWEET!

Say, will the Uly Tailsection bolt on to the 1125R? LOL

I think all this criticism of the new upgrades is amusing. I've been hanging out on badweb for a little while, and have been obsessed with Buells for a few years. I love the tube frame models as well as the XBs. I have an 03 XB9sl, and I absolutely love it. I applaud Erik and his crew for his efforts. I think the new bikes are going to be exciting. I can't wait to see how these changes are going affect the sportbike scene. We as Buell biker enthusiasts should be proud of what Erik is doing and embrace the changes.

I think the word we will see this afternoon is "Consortium" In the high tech aircraft engine world, inside the PW2000/F117 engine the Cold and Hot Section are Pratt & Whitney, made in the USA. The LPT is MTU made in Germany, with a Fiat Gearbox made in Italy. The same idea in the G/E designed CFM 56 on the B737. So what's wrong with a High Tech Motorcycle engine developed by Buell and Rotax, in a Buell designed bike? ... Terry

Noting. As a matter of fact it is the right way to do it. The Elves have the ideas, passion and the expertise to pull this off. They may have drawn on others' capacity or engineering expertise to complete the picture. This is a Buell all the way through.
I know it is an ad copy, but the slogan "Designed from the rider down" struck me a being right on.

Wouldn't it be cool if somebody designed a high end, high HP sportbike with actual street riding in mind? You know, wide power band, low end grunt, plenty of top end rush but easy to ride fast? Wouldn't that be cool?

3pm today we will see it done.

>>>>Its a BUELL motor that Rotax was merely partnered with for their production capacity.

That's not only a very accurate statement, it's the tip of the iceberg.

What if the question was not "how can we do as well as . . . .?" but rather . . . "how great can we, with our minds and resources, do?"

What if some very smart folks, in a very creative and innovative environment had been working 16 hour days for over a year not to get over the bar, but to move the bar and started from scratch challenging each and every step of the process for how it fit the big picture.

Oddly enough . . . take a look at the Ducati boards and get ready to warmly welcome some new Badwebbers.

Me? . . . I'm so twisted for a new Uly I won't get right for a while.

By the way . . . Buell rolled out their FIRST innovative new product on Thursday night with the release of the

RIDERS OF THE EDGE

(now available)

cd.

It was fun to get home just in time to see Erik Buell's name in Guitar Player magazine for his pickups. . .

Will they hit the price point too? Less than 12K?
(Someone is saying the same price point as the current XBs?, WOW, I guess I better put the new VFR800 purchase on hold for a few more weeks or hours at least!!)

I hope the website updates at 3PM...

Hmmm, Buell#3 with throw over saddlebags and handle bar risers!

Well it sounds like my concerns/fears of a new high rpm engine replacing a torquey street minded one and ruining the "Buellness" of the new bike may have been alieviated. Thanks for the hints guys, can't wait to see the new bike this afternoon.
